Obituary

Norma Halverson, age 87, of Fertile, MN, formerly of Twin Valley, MN, died Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile, MN.

Norma Gladys Groslie was born to Ole and Nellie (Eidum Johnson) Groslie on June 21 st , 1931, on a farm in Lake Alma, Saskatchewan, Canada. Although Norma had ten older siblings, she was the only child born from the union of Ole & Nellie. Both of her parents' spouses had passed away leaving Nellie with seven children: Chester, Arthur, Ellef, Elnor, Leonard, Mae, & Ervin; and Ole with three children: Leroy, Garfield, & Mabel.

Her family moved to Twin Valley, MN, where Norma attended school and graduated from high school in 1949. She worked at the soda fountain in Meyer's Drug Store while in high school and continued to do so after graduation, this is where she met her husband Allan.

Norma married Allan William Halverson on October 8 th , 1950, at Zion Lutheran Church. Allan owned and operated the Twin Valley Locker Plant. They lived in the apartment above the Locker Plant until 1959 when they moved into their new home just north of town. They raised five children: Bridget, Belinda, Bradley, Blaid, & Babette, also known as the "5 B's".

Norma was active in the American Legion Auxiliary having served as the president of the Auxiliary in 1960, and taught Sunday School at Zion Lutheran Church. In the early 1960's, Norma started working with Allan in the Locker plant, wrapping meat and doing the bookwork. Allan once stated that Norma could wrap 300 pounds of meat an hour. Norma was a renowned Norwegian cook, some of the things she made included; blood sausage, head cheese, pickled pigs feet, potato klubb with salt pork, turtle soup, Rømmegrøt, sweet soup, sandbakkelse, rossettes, krumkake and homemade beet wine.

Allan, Norma, and the "5 B's" traveled several times to Kalispell, Montana, for family reunions on Flathead Lake. They enjoyed going to the lake, camping, and traveling to visit her family members in Minnesota, California, Canada, and Montana.  One highlight for both Norma and Allan was meeting Willie Nelson while visiting their daughter Babette and grandson Tommy in Texas.

They took great pride in their home and yard and received first place in Christmas decorating contests. They both bowled on leagues, and enjoyed dancing, snowmobiling, gardening, feeding the birds, playing cards, and telling or hearing a good joke!

Norma worked alongside Allan at the Locker Plant for over 35 years when the shop closed due to Allan's macular degeneration. Norma cared for Allan in their home until his passing in April 2000. They were married just short of 50 years when Allan passed away.

In the past eighteen years, Norma has traveled with family members to visit her siblings and family in Montana, California, South Dakota, Texas, and Hawaii. She moved into the Valley Pines Apartments in Twin Valley in the fall of 2013, and into the Fair Meadow Nursing Home in July of 2015. She continued to enjoy playing bingo, caring for her hanging flower pots, feeding and watching the birds, and hearing a good joke!

Norma is survived by her children: Bridget (James) Swenson, Moorhead, MN; Belinda (Roger) Fjeld, Fertile, MN; Bradley (Lisa) Halverson, Garretson, SD; Blaid (Cindy) Halverson, Twin Valley, MN;  and Babette Camacho, San Antonio, TX,  eleven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and husband.

A memorial service will be held Friday, October 5, 2018, at 2:00 PM, with visitation with the family one hour prior to the service in the Zion Lutheran Church, Twin Valley, MN. Inurnment will take place at the Twin Valley Memorial Gardens, Twin Valley.
