Nellie Wibbels, age 99, of Mahnomen, MN, died Saturday, October 25, 2014, at the Mahnomen Health Center in Mahnomen.
Upon emigrating from the Netherlands and settling in Gregory Township, near Bejou, MN, William and Henrietta (Kruisdyke) Kerssen began their family. Their second child of seven, Nellie Henrietta, was born September 21, 1915, at home. She grew up in Gregory Township and attended country school near Bejou. Nellie cared for her younger siblings while helping her parents with the day to day farming operations. On June 24, 1941, Nellie was united in marriage to Edgar Wibbels. The couple made their home and farmed east of Bejou for 37 years, raising livestock and grain. They retired from farming and purchased Haaven's Rest Home in McIntosh, MN. After five years of operation, Nellie and Edgar sold and moved into Mahnomen. Edgar passed away in September of 1999 and Nellie remained in their home until moving to Dilworth, MN, to be closer to her daughter. Only recently had Nellie moved back to Mahnomen.
Wanting to be productive, Nellie was always active and kept herself busy. She loved to knit and crochet and go fishing with Edgar. Nellie was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Mahnomen and its Ladies Aid. She also enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her family and friends.
Nellie is survived by a daughter, Ruth (David) Soderstrom, Moorhead, MN; a son Roger (Gina) Wibbels, Atwater, CA; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one brother, Henry Kerssen, Washington State; one sister, Alieda VanDyke, Richfield, MN; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; granddaughter, Cindy; three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at 10 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Mahnomen. A visitation will be held on Friday, October 31st from 5-7 p.m., at the Anderson Family Funeral Home in Mahnomen. Interment will be held in Bejou City Cemetery, Bejou, MN.
