Muriel Adeline Olson, was born on February 3, 1928 in Waukon Township, near Gary, Minnesota. Martin and Agnes Olson were proud parents raising Muriel and her siblings: Owen Olson, Myrtle Strand, Gene Olson, Lyle Olson and Arlene Staiger. Muriel graduated from Gary High School in 1945. Being of Norwegian ancestry, she had beautiful blue eyes and breathtaking blonde hair. It was in Halstrom's Store in Bejou, Minnesota where she met the love of her life, Harold Lincoln McCollum. Harold and Muriel were married on May 10, 1947. Harold and Muriel raised six including Linda, Jim, Doug, Mark, Ricky and Craig. Muriel dedicated her life to raising her family and to loving God.
Muriel lived a fabulous life enjoying music, loving to laugh and enjoying her faith with God. She was an avid guitar and piano player and just loved to sing. She was such a dedicated servant to our gracious Savior. She demonstrated her love of God through teaching Martin Luther King to youth. Her love of God and family were beyond description. Muriel was a proud member of First Lutheran Church in Mahnomen and Ness Lutheran Church of Gary. She worked at many businesses in Mahnomen including Kjos Café, The Dairy Bar, and The Day Activity Center. Muriel was proud to affiliate with the VFW Lady's Auxiliary, served as treasurer and helped with weekly Bingo at the Bejou VFW.
Muriel and Harold raised six children, with Linda Marcia being the first born on July 28, 1948. They lived through some challenging times while living at the farm in Bejou. During a Minnesota harsh winter, they had their second child, James Allyn, born on February 10, 1950. They moved to Hibbing, Minnesota so Harold could work in the iron ore mines in the winter of 1950 and had their 3 rd child, Douglas Ross on February 6, 1953. They moved back to the Mahnomen-Bejou area in 1955. Mark Harold was born June 11, 1958 in Fosston, Minnesota. Ricky Dean and Craig Bryan were both born in Mahnomen, Minnesota, Ricky on Sept 17, 1959 and Craig on Sept 20, 1961. Harold and Muriel retired from their farm in Bejou and moved to Mahnomen in 1967. Wherever Muriel was, she left such memorable impressions with her beautiful music and fun-loving nature. Muriel passed away on December 4, 2020 at the Arbor Park Center in Moorhead, Minnesota.
Muriel is survived by her brother, Owen Olson and sister, Arlene Staiger. Her families of Linda McCollum-Greene, (William), James McCollum, (Leslie Faye), Doug McCollum (Leslie Jean), Mark McCollum (Denise), Ricky McCollum (Julie) and Craig McCollum, (Debbie). Muriel was blessed with a large family of Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren. She is preceded by her husband, Harold Lincoln (2013) and her dear grandson, Nathan (1994).
A walk-through visitation will be held for the public from 5-7 pm at the First Lutheran Church in Mahnomen on Friday, December 11, 2020. Following all Covid-19 safety protocols, social distancing will be practiced, and all must wear a mask to participate. Private Family Services will be held Saturday followed by burial at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Mahnomen.
The funeral service will be recorded and available for viewing shortly after the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to First Lutheran Church, Mahnomen.
