Obituary

Monica Kappes, 92, Stayton, OR, formerly Ada, MN, died Thursday, September 25, 2014, at Salem Hospital, Salem, OR.

Monica was born February 9, 1922, along with her twin sister Veronica, the daughters of Peter and Margaret (Beitz) Kneip, in Cummings, ND. As a young girl, she moved with her family to a farm near Lockhart, MN, where she attended school. Monica was united marriage to Aloysius "Al" Kappes on September 17, 1946, in Ada. They made Ada their home and raised their family. Monica had worked as a seamstress for many years at Olson Men's Wear in Ada, and as a nurse's aide for the Ada Hospital and later Riverview Hospital in Crookston, MN.

She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and enjoyed being a Eucharist Minister and taking communion to many of her friends at the nursing home. Monica enjoyed going to mass services and reading her bible daily. She loved to sing at church and also performed with the Inspirations group for many years. She had also worked at the church for some time and she provided and arranged cut flowers for church alters from area flower gardens.

She used her sewing skills to make numerous stuffed animals for CYO carnivals. She was proud to be able to re-purpose used clothing to dress her children and help with the family economy by altering and making clothes for others. In her later years, she spent much of her time designing and making baby quits. She also did oil painting and enjoyed coloring with color pencil, especially pictures of flowers.

She loved roses and enjoyed viewing them. Her other hobbies included puzzles, knitting, crocheting, and embroidery. She taught Catechism, babysat her grandchildren and fostered children. She also worked as a baker and deli worker, and was an active school "Grandma" for a few years. Monica was a member of the Christian Mothers and Retarded Children's Association.

She had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh. She liked being around people and enjoyed phone conversations with family hearing all the home news, as well as participating in family gatherings, watching and getting reacquainted with grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Her eyes would light up when the little ones would come for a visit.

Al died in 1981, and Monica continued to live in Ada until she moved to Halstad, MN, before moving to her daughter's home, in Stayton.

Monica is survived by her children: Ann Fetting, Fargo, ND, Mary (Dale) Rinerson, Stayton, OR, Michael (Susan), Crystal, MN, Alice (Marvin) Erstad and Jeanette Lee, both of Hillsboro, ND, Linda (Wayne) Kroshus, Ada, MN, and Robert (Jamie) Kerkhoven, MN, her siblings: Cecelia Adams, Grand Forks, ND, Mary Braunschweig, Auburn, WA, Veronica Brommenschenkel, Ada, MN, Rosenia Lindback, Apple Valley, MN, and Joe Kneip, Twin Valley, MN, 26 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, 4 great-great granddchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
