Minnie Kappes, age 98, of Ada, MN, passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at the Halstad Living Center in Halstad, MN.

Minnie Andree was born on January 29, 1925, to August and Alma (Gade) Andree in Green Meadow Township, rural Ada. She attended and graduated from the Lockhart country school. Cooking was a lifelong passion for Minnie. As a young girl, she didn't have any trouble finding work with her natural cooking, baking, and canning abilities, allowing her to work for various area farmers. She later worked at the Silver Inn Café and then the Green Lantern. Minnie was married to Russel Miller, for a time, and was blessed with 6 wonderful children. While caring for her family, Minnie always worked hard. She cooked for and managed the Green Lantern for almost 10 years. On January 5, 1967, Minnie was united in marriage to Mark Kappes and they raised their family. Together, they bought the Simonson Store and named it M&M Grocery, where Minnie proudly ran a lunch counter. After several successful years, the store was sold after which Minnie and Mark purchased a farmstead near Gary, MN. Minnie continued working, being employed with restaurants in Gary and Twin Valley. After losing their home to a tornado they built a new home near Flom, MN. Minnie worked at the Flom Café for two years and the Midtown Café in Twin Valley.  When it was time to retire, they returned to Ada. Mark passed away in 2004 and Minnie continued living in her own home until she was 90.  She then moved to Fergus Falls, MN, where she resided with daughter, Karen, for seven years. As her health declined, this past summer Minnie moved into Bridges Care Community, in Ada, and recently entered the Halstad Living Center to make her home.

Minnie was a strong, independent woman, with a fantastic sense of humor. She loved to visit, laugh, and lend a listening ear.  She was fiscally minded and operated her businesses and her home well.   Minnie was a gifted cook, waitress, and baker. She was the "best" at making everything.  Minnie was known for her delicious treats of bread, rolls, and sweets. Every year she made a huge batch of donuts, which she gave to loved ones for much anticipated Christmas gifts.  As a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ada, she served devotedly in the kitchens and always prepared the meatballs for the annual supper.  Anyone around Minnie, at the cafe or at her home, never left hungry or in need.  She had a generous spirit and found joy in providing for others.   Never to let her hands be idle, Minnie also filled her time with puzzles, playing whist, bingo, and her favorite game - Skip Bo. Minnie was proudly known as the "Skip Bo Queen", winning most every game and even learning to play it on her IPad.  She was also seriously devoted to her daily routine of watching Days of Our Lives & Wheel of Fortune.  Minnie may have been small in stature at 4'9 but she had a huge heart.  She saw the best in others and genuinely earned the respect of her family, friends, and the community.

Minnie is survived by one son, Bob (Gina) Miller of Twin Valley; five daughters: Susen Miller of Ada, Sharyn (Ken) Gregor of St. Peter, MN, Diann (Rick) Prussia of Hendrum, MN, Elaine (Billy) Bitker of Detroit Lakes, MN, and Karen (Myron) Ingebretson of Fergus Falls; 23 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and 19 great great grandchildren.

Minnie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mark; her brother, Arthur Andree; one grandson, Corey Bitker; and her great great grandson, Kade Stene.
