Minnie Borgrud, beloved Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma, age 96, of Mahnomen, MN, formerly Waubun, MN, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2018, at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home, Mahnomen, MN.
Minnie Gladys Fabre, the youngest child of Margaret (Albers) and Louis Fabre was born August 25, 1921, on the farm in Lake Grove Township, southeast of Waubun. She grew up on the farm and attended school in Waubun. Following her high school graduation in 1939, Minnie furthered her education and received her teaching certificate. At the age of 19, she began teaching at Espe School Dist. 12. While teaching, Minnie met the love of her life, Orrin Borgrud. They were united in marriage on May 19, 1944, and made their home on Orrin's parent's farm.
In addition to teaching at country school, during the 1950's and 1960's she taught sick and homebound children in their homes. Minnie was also a substitute teacher for Ogema, White Earth and Waubun schools. She continued helping in school from time to time until 2000 when she retired, closing a 52 year stretch of teaching. Orrin passed away in 1988 and three years later Minnie moved into Waubun. She made her home in Waubun until 2014 when she entered the nursing home.
You could often find Minnie hard at work in her kitchen or gardens. She had both beautiful flower and large vegetable gardens and enjoyed making treats and sharing the produce with her neighbors. She would put her whole heart into doing things to brighten the day for others around her. Throughout the years, Minnie kept busy and remained active with her church and in the community. She taught Sunday School, Summer Bible School, was a former ladies aid President and Vice President and helped with the church dinners, bake sales and the remodeling of the church. She served on the Mahnomen County Welfare Board, County Extension Board and the Waubun Community Education Board. Minnie was involved with the building of the Waubun Community Center, Relay for Life, Crop Walk and received the Golden Deeds Award in 2003. She was also an avid Waubun Bomber fan, a member of the Busy Bee Homemakers Club and had a wonderful collection of cardinals which she displayed year-round.
Minnie is survived by four children: Kathy (Rollie) Schmidt, Brenda (Mark) Kersting, Bruce (Colleen) Borgrud and Todd Borgrud all of Waubun; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant daughter, Mary; and 10 siblings.
Blessed be the memory of Minnie Borgrud.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at the Circle of Faith, United Church of Christ in Waubun, MN. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior at the church.
