Obituary

Milo Joseph Winter passed away peacefully at the Mahnomen Health Center on June 24, 2018. He was born in Beaulieu, February 20, 1926 to Adam and Amelia Winter. He moved to Waubun area at age 7. Milo married Lucille (Schoenborn), the love of his life, on November 13, 1945 at St. Joseph Church, Beaulieu. They raised 14 children on their dairy farm west of Waubun where they lived for 51 years and upon retiring moved to Waubun where they currently reside.

Milo was a loving husband and father, and a compassionate and caring grandfather and  great-grandfather. He was an active community member which included Popple Grove Township Supervisor and Board Member, Lake Park and Cuba Insurance Board of Directors, Mahnomen County Conservation Board, St Ann's Church Trustee, Mahnomen/Waubun Catholic Aid Council Trustee, Knights of Columbus Member, Eucharistic Minister, and along with Lucille were recipients of 1981 Valley Farmer and Homemaker Award and honored as the 2017 Northland Diocese Senior Couple receiving the Bishop's Medal. He loved nature and brought Lucille flowers from the prairie fields on a regular basis, was a bird watcher and an avid gardener. Along with getting together with friends, visiting the sick, going fishing, playing cards, and telling stories he added woodcarving to his many talents and hobbies after retiring from farming. His detailed and exquisite ducks, loons and fish where highlighted in newspaper articles and on WDAY news. He loved music and played drums in The Knights of Harmony band at age 17, trumpet in High school and only a few weeks before he passed continued playing the harmonica. He lived a spiritual life setting examples for the many lives he touched.

He is survived by his loving wife Lucille, 13 children: Yvonne Schilplin, Fargo, ND, Kenneth Winter, Waubun, Karen (Todd) Renner, Detroit Lakes, MN, Barbara Jarett, Carnation, WA, Joyce (Mike) Stromberg, Marionette, WI, Janice (Brent) Mielke, Sleepy Eye, MN, Kathy Winter Jackson, Mahnomen, Peggy (Roger) Francis, Mahnomen, Mark (Aimee) Winter, Detroit Lakes, Caroline (Gary) Johnson, Fargo, Clyde (Monica) Winter, Twin Valley, MN, Mary Kay (Dale) Nelson, Glyndon, MN, and Bruce (Tammy) Winter, Waubun; 34 grandchildren: Freddy, Chad, Jason, Melanie, Jessica, Samantha, MeLinda, MiRanda, Montana, Marshall, Adam, Karlee, Jeffrey, Tammy, Tyler, Anthony, Adam, Austin, Kassidy, Jaqueline, Cassandra, Lauren, Cecelia, Marghie, Milo, Michael, Nicholas, Jasmine, Zachary, Sabrina, Tyson, Tracee, Taylor and Tessa; 25 great-grandchildren; brother, Ted Winter, Callaway, MN; brothers and sisters-in-law: Lillian Winter, Moorhead, MN, LaVerne (Verla) Schoenborn, Eleanor Schoenborn, Delmer (Betty) Schoenborn, Anthony (JoAnn) Schoenborn, and Sylvester (Pat) Schoenborn, all of Mahnomen.

He is preceded in death by his son, Jerome; twin daughters, Marlene and Darlene; unborn infant son, John; parents, Adam and Amelia Winter; sister and brother-in-law, Veronica (Gordon) Havercamp; brother, Herman; infant brother, Lloyd; two grandchildren, Addison and Karissa; two sons-in-law, Fred Schilplin and Thomas Jarett; in-laws, Herman and Cecelia Schoenborn; brothers and sisters-in-law: Wally (Mardelle) Schoenborn, Marvin Schoenborn, and Sissy Winter.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, June 28, 2018 at 10 :00 am St. Ann's Catholic Church in Waubun.  Visitation will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm with a prayer service at 6:30 pm followed by a Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus.  Burial will be in the St. Ann's Cemetery. Waubun.

The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the Mahnomen Health Center staff for their wonderful acts of kindness and love given to Milo and his family.

**In lieu of flowers, memorials given to St. Ann's Elevator Project are welcomed.
