Michael "Popcorn" Asleson, age 63, of Ulen, MN, died Thursday, July 27, 2017 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND.
Michael Don Asleson, lovingly known as Popcorn, was born on June 26, 1954, the only son of Donald and Pearl (Nygaard) Asleson, in Detroit Lakes, MN. He was raised in the Ulen community growing up with his four sisters. Popcorn attended school in Ulen, graduating with the class of 1972. Popcorn worked at a few local bars and liquor stores, but made his career at the Nordic Lounge in Ulen where he bartended and was a loyal employee for over 27 years. He had the "gift to gab" and loved to visit, so bartending was a true calling. Over the years, Popcorn listened to many stories, dried a few tears, and shared much laughter with his patrons, who always became his friends. Popcorn was an avid sports fan, to say it lightly. He watched all different sports teams, but especially cheered for the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings, and Minnesota Gophers. He enjoyed taking in Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon games and was passionate for the local Norman County East / Ulen-Hitterdal Titans. Players young and old knew Popcorn was their biggest fan! All of Popcorn's nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews were his greatest treasures. He loved cheering them on at their sporting events and extra-curricular activities, and simply spending time with each of them. Popcorn also enjoyed trips to Laughlin, NV with his friends, as well as a drive or walk around town. He shared a home with his mother and sister, as family was truly near and dear to his heart. He lived a carefree and happy life. His contagious smile and zest for life will be missed by all who knew him.
Michael is survived by his mother, Pearl of Ulen; his sisters, Bonnie (Clair) Brenna of Minneapolis, MN, Barbara (Wayne) Bakke, Beverly (Gayle) Hansen, and Beth Burnside all of Ulen; his Godchildren, Dana Scott and Wade Bakke; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father, Donald Myren Asleson.
