Merlin H. Dale

Merlin H. Dale, 89, Shelly, MN, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2012, after a long battle with cancer, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Fargo, ND.

Merlin was born May 10, 1923, at Climax, MM, the son of Henry and Ida (Rudd) Dale. He attended school in Climax before enlisting in the US Navy, serving during World War II. After his discharge he returned to the area. He was united in marriage to Arlene Gjerstad and they raised five children, Wayne, Craig, Bruce, Debra, and Terry. They had lived in Minneapolis and Crookston, MN, before coming to Shelly in 1958. He operated the Shelly Meat Market for many years before retiring. Merlin was an active member of the Nielsville American Legion Post and Shelly Marsh River Lutheran Church. He always cared for his vegetable garden and shared the harvest with many neighbors and friends.

Merlin is survived by his children, Wayne (Nancy) Dale, Eden Prairie, MN, Craig (Rose) Dale, New Ulm, MN, Bruce (Julie) Dale, Lincoln, NE, Debra Dale, Sunnyside, WA, and Terry (Stephanie) Dale, Portland, ND, one sister, Gladys Chandler, Portland, ND, 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Arlene, and three brothers, Harvey, Edgar, and Duaine.

Memorial Service: 10:30AM Saturday, November 17, 2012, at Shelly Marsh River Lutheran Church, Shelly, MN.

Visitation: Friday 5-7PM with a 6:30PM prayer service at Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad, MN.

Burial: Marsh River Cemetery, Shelly, MN.

Military Rites: Hubbard American Legion Post #336, Nielsville, MN, and the Moorhead, MN National Guard Honors Unit.
