Watch Mavis' Funeral

Mavis Wermager, age 93, of Ulen, MN, formerly of Waubun, MN, died on Friday, November 20, 2020, at Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen.

Mavis Odell Rogers, the daughter of Otto and Milla (Fossum) Rogers, was born weighing only 3 lbs. on May 4, 1927, near Twin Valley, MN. She was raised east of Twin Valley and attended Popple Grove Country School. On August 22, 1948, Mavis was united in marriage to Everett Wermager at Wild Rice Lutheran Church, rural Twin Valley. The couple made their home in Waubun and were blessed with three children. Mavis stayed home with the children until all were in school at which time, she entered the workforce. She was head cook at the Waubun Public School from 1964 until 1989. Over those years, Mavis lovingly provided meals for hundreds of students and she held a special place in her heart for each of them. Even though they lived in Waubun, Mavis and Everett loved their cabin on South Twin Lake, spending as much time as possible there. Following her retirement, Mavis continued to stay very busy. She baked and decorated beautiful cakes for many special events. Although she was known for her wedding cakes, she never missed one of her grandchildren's requests for a birthday cake or other special occasion. Mavis was also a wonderful cook and delighted in treating her family to homemade donuts, pies, lefse, and flatbread. She enjoyed her homemakers club and spent many hours crafting. Mavis liked to sew, garden, crochet, and tinker on projects whenever she could. She especially cherished time with her children and grandchildren. Mavis had an adventurous spirit that did not fade as she aged. She loved to travel, proudly rode a motorcycle at the age of 83, and held the record for the oldest "tuber" on Island Lake. Mavis was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Waubun where she served with the ladies' aide. She was also a member of the Women of Waubun Group and the longest member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Everett passed away in 1999 and Mavis continued living in her home until 2011, when she moved into Viking Manor Nursing Home. Receiving tender care, Mavis made her home there since that time.

Mavis is survived by one son, Wayne (Lenore) Wermager of West Fargo, ND; two daughters, Lynnae (fiancé, Curt) Wallace of Moorhead, MN, and Sherri (Stephen) Nolan of West Fargo; eight grandchildren: Shaina Huovinen, Terryl Johnson, Brian Wallace, Justin Wallace, Kelli Witt, Katie Pratt, Erikka Brownlee, and Brittany Nolan; 14 great-grandchildren: Joseph Jr., Caleb, and Aubrey Huovinen, Marcus and Samuel Johnson, Gracie and Colt Wallace, Mason, Peyton and Jace Witt, Natalie Gramm, Weston Brownlee, Nikolai and Sophia Pratt; her sister, Verla (LaVern) Schoenborn of Mahnomen; sisters-in-law: Donna Rogers, Avis Wermager, Evy Wermager, and Arlys Wermager.

Mavis was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant twin brother, Francis; and her siblings: Ethel Morken, Alta Winter, Raymond, William, Gilford, Earl, and Philip Rogers.

A PRIVATE funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at Wild Rice Lutheran Church, rural Twin Valley, MN, with burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery in Mahnomen, MN.  Following the funeral service, a video recording of Mavis' funeral will be viewable here.
