Mary Ann Kaiser, age 88, of Mahnomen, MN, died Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at Sanford Palliate Care, Fargo, ND.
Mary Ann Stalberger was born on July 12, 1929, to Joe and Mary (Winter) Stalberger in Beaulieu, MN. She was baptized at St. Joeseph's Catholic Church in Beaulieu. In 1935, the family moved to a farm just west of Ogema, MN. Mary Ann attended country school through the eighth grade and completed her high school years at Mount Saint Benedict in Crookston, MN. After graduating in 1947, Mary Ann worked at Edna's Food Market in Mahnomen. She fell in love with Donald Kaiser and the two were united in marriage on November 9, 1948, at the Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Ogema. The couple made their home near Donald's parents' farmstead near Gary, MN. They started their own dairy farm with the six bred heifers they had received as a wedding gift. Mary Ann loved life on the farm, and especially enjoyed feeding and caring for the many baby calves as the herd grew. Following Donald's death in 1997, Mary Ann continued to farm with her son, Donny. During the summers, many grandsons would come to help ease the workload. In 2004, Mary Ann moved to Valley View Commons in Mahnomen where she made her home until her death.
Baking was one of Mary Ann's passions. Her talent showed through in her brownies, apple pies, chocolate chip cookies, rhubarb desserts, and many other treats. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting and reading in her spare time. Deer hunting in the fall was a special time of year. Mary Ann would make the crew a great big meal and she just loved listening to their stories and seeing the guys spend time together. She also kept in touch with many family members with good old-fashioned pen and paper letters. Mary Ann was an avid MN Lynx and Timberwolves fan who rarely missed a game on television. She was a member of the Jolly Homemakers Club and also a long-time member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, where she was active with the ladies aid, a parish council member, religious education teacher, leader of Monday Morning Rosary at the nursing home and proclaimer at many masses. In 2006, Mary Ann was named the Mahnomen County Outstanding Female Senior. It was an honor that was well deserved with her many hours of volunteering. Throughout life, Mary Ann most valued her faith, family, and friends. She was the glue that held the family together and spent a life of service to others. Mary Ann enjoyed living at Valley View and treasured the many friendships she made, especially with Ed Cummings. Mary Ann looked forward to Friday night suppers with her son, Joe, and the monthly flowers she received from her oldest daughter, Mary. Mary Ann taught her family, through her example, to work hard, appreciate what you have, always be helpful, and to love one another. She will be greatly missed by many.
Mary Ann is survived by two daughters, Mary (John) Ondrush of Rosenberg, TX, and Linda (Leo) Filipi of Moorhead, MN; three sons: Joe Kaiser (Pam Bueng) and Donny Kaiser both of Mahnomen, and Steve "Pete" (Rita) Kaiser of Herman, MN; one brother, Elroy (Celia) Stalberger of Clarissa, MN; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
