Obituary

Mary Rose (Thompson) Benais, age 30, of Moorhead, MN, passed away unexpectedly on November 3, 2023.

Mary was born on May 12, 1993, in Roseville, MN, to Kenneth Castonguay and Marion Thompson. She attended school in Pine Point, MN, and later in Park Rapids, MN. Mary exhibited her feisty spirit from a young age. At just 5 years old, she fearlessly practiced boxing with her brothers, showcasing her indomitable toughness. Known for her strong work ethic, Mary often juggled multiple jobs simultaneously, embracing any task with dedication and determination. She was very involved in the restaurant industry and later took an interest in auto mechanics. In 2015, Mary was blessed with the arrival of her beautiful son, Adrial. Undeterred by challenges, she obtained her GED in her late 20s and pursued further education, studying auto mechanics at the Minnesota State Community and Technical College and later took an interest in cosmetology. On October 30, 2021, Mary married Troy Benais and the couple made their home in Moorhead.

Known as the life of the party, Mary effortlessly made friends wherever she went and enjoyed the company of friends and family. She was a wonderful aunt to her nieces and nephews, spending time with them making memories. Proud of her Native heritage, she was a Powwow Princess growing up. In her leisure time, Mary found joy in tinkering with vehicles, including the hands-on task of fixing her own car. Whether engaging in leeching, laughing with friends, or embarking on small side projects to earn a living, Mary's enthusiasm for life was evident. Her beautiful spirit is dancing in Heaven, and she will be greatly missed by those who loved her.

Mary is survived by her loving husband, Troy Benais; son, Adrial Bruguier; mother, Marion Thompson; siblings, Ethan (Jessica) Smith, Albert James Basswood III, Sharon Lynn Basswood, Tommy Lee Basswood; Travis Lee Castonguay (Bridget Klytta), Brandon Ken Castonguay, and Kallie Jo Castonguay; and many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth, and brother, Chad Michael Castonguay.
