Marvin
Shambow
Aug 19, 1947 — Sep 25, 2025
Mahnomen
Marvin "Bumbo" Shambow, age 78, of Mahnomen, MN, passed away Thursday, September 25, 2025, at his home under the care of HIA Hospice.
Marvin James Shambow was born on August 19, 1947 in White Earth, MN, to Marvin and Darlene (Perrault) Shambow, one of 11 children. He grew up and attended school on the Iron Range in northern Minnesota.
In his younger years, Marvin lived a life of adventure, hitchhiking across the United States. His travels brought him to many cities, where he worked odd jobs, met people from all walks of life, and met many different characters thanks to his gift of gab. In the early 1990s, Bumbo returned to Minnesota and settled in Mahnomen. Over the years, he worked at the Shooting Star Casino as a bus driver, and later in janitorial roles at the White Earth Tribal College and the Mahnomen County Courthouse.
Bumbo was known for walking everywhere he went, often stopping by the Red Apple Café to chat, share jokes, and talk politics. He loved traveling, especially trips to Duluth, and had a deep devotion to family. He always kept track of the growing family tree as the family historian and cherished time spent with his nieces, nephews, and loved ones at family gatherings. Bumbo cared for his mother for many years as her driver, and in his later years, his nieces and nephews—Toni Myhre, Joey Myhre, Bud Myhre, and Shannon Eck—helped care for him in return. He will be remembered for his fun-loving spirit, quick humor, and the way he connected with people wherever he went.
Bumbo is survived by his siblings: Donna Eck, Leonard Shambow, Michael Shambow, Gary Shambow, and Margaret Myhre; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Bumbo was preceded by his parents; siblings: Barbara, Dorothy, Dennis, Lenora, and infant Dean; and nephew, Preston.
A family-led graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 1:00 pm at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, rural Mahnomen, with a celebration of life gathering at Matt & Marlene Wytaske's home (1260 MN-200, Mahnomen, MN) immediately following.
