He was baptized and confirmed into faith at the Gary Lutheran Church where he remained a lifetime member. Doug graduated high school with the class of 1958, and went on to work with his father at Gary Seed & Produce. He had a potato sales route that he ran which went from Gary to Rock Rapids, Iowa for several years.
Doug was united in marriage to Harriet Broers on December 15, 1958 in Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley. They moved into Twin Valley during the mid-1970's where they have made their home since. Doug was employed at Viking Snowmobiles for seven years where he was a foreman much of the time. During this time, he continued to farm, log, and run the saw mill. He retired in his early 60's but could often be found out on the place east of town.
