Obituary

Marion E. Handyside, age 88, of Fosston, MN, died Monday, March 21, 2016, at Essentia Health in Fosston, MN, with family at her side.

Marion was born March 1, 1928, to Leo and Beulah (Slocum) Hicks in Duluth, MN. She spent her early years in Duluth and married Albert "Allie" in 1945. They made their home on a farm south of Lengby, MN, where they raised their eight children. Following Allie's death in 1973, Marion married Kenny Fechner, a childhood friend, who later passed away in 1979. Marion worked out of the home in addition to being a housewife and mom. She worked at the Naytahwaush Sewing Factory, the Center for Human Environment, served on the Mahube Board, camp cook for Perry's Hunting & Guide Service above Yellowstone, and a cook for Holly Mountain Hunting Lodge in Montana.

Marion was a talented seamstress, sewing all her daughters' wedding gowns, making dresses and clothing for all her grandchildren. Drawings, painting, embroidery and quilting were her passion. Marion stayed very active and enjoyed roller skating, ice skating, skiing, sledding, and taking trips with her grandchildren to Duluth, Montana, Las Vegas well into her 70's. She will be dearly missed by all.

Marion is survived by her sons: Allen (Joyce) of Meadview, AZ, Perry (Susan) of Eaton, CO, Terrance (Debra) of Mahnomen, Gary (Gloria) also of Meadview, and Jerry (Lori) of Lengby; her daughters: Bonnie (Alan) Brusven of Mahnomen, Ginger (James III) Tibbetts of Bemidji and Darlene (Doug) Spaeth also of Mahnomen; brothers: Don, Danny and Jerry Hicks; sisters, Delores Busch and Muriel (Jack) Gellately; 24 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren and her large extended family.

Marion is preceded in death by her parents; husbands Albert and Kenny; siblings: Leo, Ron and Dolly and a grandson, Tommy.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at 10:00am at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Naytahwaush, MN. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 28, 2016, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Naytahwaush from 5-7pm with a prayer service at 6:30 pm. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Pine Hill Family Cemetery, rural Lengby.
