Marian Schreiner, age 91, of Ulen, MN, passed away on Monday, September 11, 2023 at Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen, surrounded by her loving family.
Marian Sigred (Syverson) Schreiner was born on June 8, 1932, in rural Wyndmere, ND, to McCarl and Gina (Hegseth) Syverson. Marian's early life was marked by her mother's passing when she was just three years old. Her aunt, Sophie Syverson, moved into their home to provide care and support for the girls. Despite their challenges, the girls worked diligently and cherished many joyful moments.
During her teenage years, Marian relocated to Fargo, where she worked as both a waitress and a nanny. It was at a dance in Dilworth where she crossed paths with the love of her life, Gerald Schreiner. They exchanged vows on June 8, 1957, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Felton, MN, and established their home on a farm near Ada, MN. In June 1965, they acquired a farm near Ulen, MN, where they raised their family. Marian embraced her role as a farm wife with passion, delighting everyone with her scrumptious meals, particularly her famous chocolate cake and chocolate chip cookies. She dedicated herself to baking all the Christmas cookies and candies, a tradition she upheld even in her final year, including the making of Krumkake for Easter.
In the early 1970s, Marian began working as a baker at Dale's Grocery in Ulen, where she devoted over 25 years to crafting bread, doughnuts, and rolls. Her dedication extended to her membership in the Ulen VFW Auxiliary, where she collaborated with fellow women in serving and preparing delicious meals. She was also an active member of the Dilworth VFW Auxiliary.
In 2001, Marian and Jerry relocated from their farm to a home in Ulen. Tragically, Jerry passed away in 2004, but Marian continued to reside in the house until 2013, when she made her home in an apartment in Moorhead. While in Moorhead, she cherished living close to her four sisters, who frequently gathered for card games and heartfelt visits. Marian also loved playing BINGO.
In November of 2019, Marian received a diagnosis of Congestive Heart Disease, prompting her return to Ulen, where she resided in the Northern Lights Assisted Living. She grew to appreciate this living arrangement, bonding with the caring nurses who attended to her and forming close connections with her neighbors. This move also brought her nearer to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who knew they could always visit her for ice cream treats, homemade cookies, or bars. Having family over to visit filled her heart with joy. Over the years, she embroidered and made many gorgeous quilts for her grandchildren to cherish. Never were her hands idle, as she always had a beautiful piece in the works. In May 2023, Marian moved to Viking Manor Nursing Home following a fall and remained there until her passing.
Marian is survived by her five children: Joanne Bliss (John Waage), Mary Schreiner, Mark (Shari) Schreiner, Caroline (Tim) Gerner, and Tom (Sherri) Schreiner; 11 grandchildren: Robbi (Bradley) Oberg, Kay (Doug) Toczek, Jacob (Megan) Schreiner, Wade (Ashley) Gerner, Kyle (Alyssa) Gerner, Brooke (Armando) Suárez, Matthew (Elyssa) Bliss, Leah (Alex) Summers-Milne, Stephanie (Travis) Walstrom, Brandon (Maggie) Schreiner, and Courtney Waage; 23 great-grandchildren: Raegan and Brecken Oberg, Anthony (Danielle Knopfler) Toczek, Noah and Ella Toczek, Gracie, Sadie, and Marley Schreiner, Michael and Eleanor Bliss, Danni Olsen, Natalie and Jackson Gerner, Griffin, Case, Everly, and Collins Gerner, Armando and Zander Suárez, Madelyn, Tucker, and Westyn Walstrom, and Amelia Schreiner; her sisters: Fern Foyt and Gladys Dahlsad; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marian was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jerry, great-grandson Brody Jaxton Schreiner, her parents McCarl and Gina, as well as her siblings and their spouses: Inga and Clarence Jordheim, Ann and Donald Hektner, Selma Breden, Vernon Dahlsad, Stanley Quam, and Alfred Foyt. She is also preceded in death by her Aunt Sophie Syverson, parents-in-law Joseph and Leona Schreiner, and siblings-in-law, Willis and Joyce Schreiner, Arlene and Harold Erickson, and Earl Schreiner.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 18, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation starting one hour prior, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ada, MN. Burial will take place at the Ada City Cemetery.
The family of Marian Schreiner extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff of Viking Manor Nursing Home and the Northern Lights Living Center for the exceptional care provided to their beloved Mom. Marian held deep affection for her caregivers and the compassionate 'girls' who assisted in her care. Their unwavering respect and affection meant the world to her.
