Obituary

Marcella Conlon, age 103, of Fargo, ND, formerly Mahnomen, MN, died Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Elim Care Center, Fargo, ND, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Marcella F. Conlon "Marcie" was born January 26, 1915, in Mahnomen County, to Paul and Mabel (Bergquist) Obermiller. She grew up on the family farm, attending school in Mahnomen. Marcie married William Conlon and to this union, a son, Curtis, was born. Marcie worked for Johnson Sisters' Clothing Store in Mahnomen, until they went out of business. She then operated her own clothing store in Mahnomen. After selling her business, Marcie began working at Reuben's Cleaners. When the dry cleaners closed, Marcie began working out of her home, doing custom sewing and alterations. She did not advertise her business to clients, as her amazing sewing abilities and pleasant personality were widely known. Marcie continued working from home until 2010, and at the age of 95, she hung up her needles, unplugged her sewing machine and officially retired. Marcie continued to reside in her home until 2010, when she moved to Kindred, ND, to live with her sister, Pat. She lived with Pat until 2013, at which time Marcie moved into Elim Nursing Home due to her declining health. Marcie was a very patient, nurturing lady, who never spoke a harsh word towards anyone. Family was very important to her and in general she loved children and babies. Over the years, she helped many people with their sewing needs, from a simple hem and a button to elaborate dresses, even upholstery. Each Christmas started the same, with the children donning their newly sewn matching pajamas. In addition to sewing, Marcie enjoyed gardening, singing in church, traveling, and watching sports, especially baseball. She was known to be a night owl, keeping the midnight oil burning with all her projects she had going on at one time. She was a wonderful lady with a beautiful spirit that will be missed by many. Marcie is survived by her son, Curtis (Marlys) Conlon, Wales, MI; three granddaughters: Yvonne (John) Markel, Kelly (John) Mertz and Rhonda Conlon-Jelinek; six great-grandchildren; one great- great-grandchild; a sister, Katherine "Pat" McCollum, Fargo, ND, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Mabel; brothers: Donald, Leonel and Llewellyn; sisters, Clarane Obermiller and Hazel Bastyr; and brothers-in-law, William Bastyr and Robert McCollum. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, Mahnomen, MN, with Pastor Gary Lundberg officiating. Visitation will take place at Anderson Family Funeral Home, Mahnomen, MN, Monday, March 12, 2018, from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. and 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
