Mabel attended school in Ada. After graduation she attended the New York Hairstyle Academy in Fargo, ND, along with her life-long friend Alta Johnson. They then moved to Fertile, MN, to work at the Fox Beauty Salon.
On May 24, 1951 she married John Hagen of Fertile in a double wedding ceremony with Alta and Lloyd Brunsberg. Mabel and John had two children, Patricia and Larry. Mabel continued to do hairstyling work for over 30 years in Fertile. She had many patrons who became dear friends over those years.
John and Mabel were members of Concordia Lutheran Church where Mabel taught Sunday School. She enjoyed attending her Circle and had fond memories of working at the Concordia food stand at the fair. Mabel was also a Cub Scout den mother.
John and Mabel were able to take some memorable trips. They traveled to Hawaii, Tahiti, and Europe. After retirement they wintered in Texas for many years.
Mabel loved nothing more than being with her family. She made holidays so special. She especially looked forward to her birthday celebration at the lake each year where she was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who all adored her. She was a wonderful cook and is celebrated for her amazing fudge recipe. Mabel took pride in her flower gardens. She liked doing jigsaw puzzles and craft projects. She had dear friends in her neighborhood and loved visiting with them.
Mabel is survived by her husband of 69 years John; daughter, Patricia (Duane) Gates; and son Larry (Debi) Hagen; She was so proud of her grandchildren, Stephen, Christine, David, Paul, Molly, and Hannah; She also loved hearing about her 8 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brother, Robert Smith; and
in-laws, Lucille Severson, Alice Knutson, Arnie and Luming Hagen and Monroe and Jeanette Hagen. She also leaves many nieces and nephews who remember her kindness.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Bert Smith. She missed them every day and was united with them as she entered heaven.
Her six grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. A video recording of the service will be available on the Erikson-Vik-Ganje website. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that memorials be given to Concordia Lutheran Church in Fertile or the Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile.
