Lynelle Sue Slininger of Mahnomen, MN, passed away on Tuesday, November 25th, 2025 at the Mahnomen Health Center surrounded by her loving family.
Lynelle was born on August 7, 1955, in Ada, MN, to Clayton and Juanita (Aasgaard) Thompson. She was baptized at Wild Rice Lutheran Church, rural Twin Valley, MN, and confirmed in Christ at Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley. Lynelle was first raised on her family's small grain and dairy farm near Ulen, MN, until 1966 when they moved to a farm north of Twin Valley. She then attended and graduated from Twin Valley High School where she was a cheerleader and a drummer in the band. Following high school, Lynelle was joined in marriage with Donald Slininger and they lived on the dairy farm in rural Twin Valley that they owned and operated with his parents. She graduated with a nursing degree from Thief River Community College and was employed by Ada Hospital and Nursing Home for several years before she returned to work on the farm full time with her family until 1999. They then moved to rural Mahnomen where she worked on Steinmetz Farms until she retired this past year.
While having a "wicked arm" growing up playing softball & baseball with her siblings, cousins and friends, Lynelle was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. She passed on that passion by pitching balls to her children and grandchildren whenever she had the opportunity and encouraging them in their various sports and activities. Lynelle was very family-centric and loved being able to bring the family together, especially around the dinner table. She enjoyed cooking her classic meals and "the favorites" just to see each child smile.
Everyone knew Lynelle for her incredible work ethic as she gave her all to the farm and in the home from sunrise to well beyond sundown. While not being one to speak up often she loved fiercely, and did all she could to pass that along to those close to her. Lynelle's love for animals was clear in the close connection she had with every dairy cow and pet on the farm.
Lynelle is survived by her two sons, Brad (Laura) Slininger of Pleasant Hill, CA, and Charles (Natalie) Slininger of Rosemount, MN; two daughters, Kristin (Eric) Schmidt of Fosston, MN, and Sarah (Michael) Johnson of Williston, ND; brother, Kevin Thompson of Hopkins, MN; three sisters: Wanda Asleson of West Fargo, ND, Vicki (Tim) Hurlburt of Walker, MN, and Kelly (Rob) Sauer of Holland, MI; five sister-in-laws: Kathy Thompson of West Fargo, ND, Diane Peterson of Fergus Falls, MN, Judy Fugleberg of Twin Valley, MN, Joyce Zak of East Grand Forks, MN, and Janet Thompson of Barnesville, MN; eleven grandchildren: Christopher, Jack, Kelsey, Amanda, Kyla, Addison, Ginny, Ryan, JoLynn, Alex, and Brooklyn; one great-granddaughter, Avery, with another on the way; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald; son, Mitchell; and two brothers, Loren and Clayton Jr. "Bub".
