Obituary

Lula B. Kappes, age 77, of Waubun, MN, died Friday, February 21, 2014, at her home.

Lula Bell Card was born November 20, 1936, in Macon, MS. Her mom died when she was only a few days old. She was raised in Shuaqualak, MS, by her nieces, where she also attended school. Following her schooling, Lula was united in marriage to Virgil Kappes in Pipestone, MN. The couple made their first home on the Kappes family farm, east of Borup, MN. In 1969, they moved into town where they owned and operated the Borup Grocery Store. Lula and Virgil then moved east of Waubun in 1977. They sold the place in 1995 to their son, Mike, and headed south to Weslaco, TX. In 2000, Lula moved back to Waubun where she lived until her death.

The simple beauty of nature and all the animals just amazed Lula. She could sit outside, drink her coffee and take in the splendor for hours. Fishing from an early age made it second nature to Lula. She loved fishing in both the summer and winter months. When Lula wasn't fishing you could find her crocheting blankets for family and friends. She loved to visit and have company, and in her later years, Lula enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino.

Lula is survived by one daughter; Virginia Kappes, of Waubun, five sons: Ralph (Sheila) of Ravensdale, WA, Frank of Hawley, Stuart (Linda) of Pierson, IA, Mike (Vicki) of Waubun, and Jack (Jeanette) of Butte, MT; 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding Lula in death were her parents, eight brothers: Oscar Card, Woodrow Card, Robert Card, Curtis Pate, Willie Card, Thomas Card, Murray Card and James Card; one sister, Elizabeth Card; and very special nieces: Louise Duckworth, Sallie Kirkland, Mary Ethel, and Erlene Misso.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at the Anderson Family Funeral Home, Mahnomen.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral.

Interment will be held at the Ada City Cemetery, Ada, MN.
