Luddie Wolbeck, age 99, of Mahnomen, MN, died Thursday, August 29, 2013, at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.
Luddie was born April 14, 1914, in New Prague, MN, the only daughter of Alois and Madeline (Turek) Nedved. When she was only 3 years old, her family moved to Mahnomen, where she would grow up and attend country school.
On June 26, 1934, Luddie was united in marriage to Hubert Wolbeck in Mahnomen. The couple made their home south of Mahnomen where they farmed and raised their family. Luddie and Hubert were blessed with six children; five living into adulthood and a daughter, Judith, who died shortly after birth. Over the years on the farm, Luddie worked side by side with Hubert to accomplish the daily chores, plus cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children's needs. In 1982, they moved into a home Hubert built for them in Mahnomen. On December 11, 1992, Hubert passed away and Luddie remained in their home, with son, Jim, until 2009 when she entered the nursing home.
In addition to working beside Hubert, they also began making quilts together on the farm. They continued making them after moving into town. Luddie's family has many beautiful quilts they will treasure as a keepsake in her memory. Luddie had a genuine love for animals. She also enjoyed baking and cooking and you never left her home hungry. Luddie was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and its Ladies Aid, where she peeled many potatoes for church functions.
Luddie is survived by her children: Bernice Voit, Mahnomen, LouAnn (Al) Olien, Fargo, ND, Joan (Joseph) Safar, Waubun, MN, and James, Mahnomen; son-in-law, James Janusch, Waubun; 18 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two daughters, Luddie and infant, Judith; son-in-law, Ervin Voit; two grandchildren, John Voit and Tammy Safar; and three brothers: Louie, Ludvig and Eddie.
