Loren Smith, age 43, of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died as a result of a massive heart attack on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at Essentia Health Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.
Loren James Smith, the son of Phyllis Smith and Lyle Johnson was born on June 12, 1969 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He grew up in the Callaway and Ogema, Minnesota areas where he attended school. He spent most of his life in the Detroit Lakes area, with his mother, Phyllis and her husband, Tom, who lovingly raised Loren as his own. Loren worked in Fargo, making pallets at a manufacturing plant and also proudly earned his welding degree. Loren was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish, and always enjoyed a good fish fry after his catch. Loren was a traveler at heart and saw many places around the United States. He also enjoyed playing Bingo with family and friends. Loren had many struggles in life but maintained his strong faith in God through it all. He will be dearly missed by his family.
Loren is survived by his parents, Phyllis and Tom Torgerson of Detroit Lakes; two sons, Loren Smith Jr., and Trevor Smith both of Portland, Oregon; one sister, Patty Smith of Detroit Lakes; and one brother, Corey (Peggy) Haverkamp of White, Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his biological father, Lyle Johnson; his maternal grandmother, Evelyn Smith; and two uncles, Carl Smith and Dennis Smith.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at St. Benedicts Catholic Church in White Earth, Minnesota, led by Father Walter Butor OMI. Special music was provided by Bruce Engebretson. Visitation was Monday, July 16th from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, with a prayer service at 6:30 pm, at the White Earth Community Center in White Earth, Minnesota. Serving as pallbearers were Darin Bachmeier, Eric Soberg, Raymond Fairbanks, Tim Smith, Anthony Bachmeier, and Brian Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Lisa Denneny, Sherry Smith, and Kyle Bachmeier.
Interment was at Calvary Cemetery, White Earth.
