Lonnie Anderson of Ogema, MN, formerly of Ulen, passed away on August 8, 2024, surrounded by his family at the home he built on White Earth Lake.
Lonnie Richard Anderson was born on March 19, 1955, to Lila (Berland) and Russel Anderson. They made their home in rural Rollag until they moved to Ulen in 1965. He was baptized at Rollag Lutheran Church and was confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen. He graduated with the Ulen-Hitterdal class of 1973 and was active in baseball, band and choir. After high school, Lonnie attended the University of Minnesota in Crookston and obtained a degree in hotel and restaurant management. He interned one summer on the Minnesota North Shore at Naniboujou Lodge and was later chef at the Norseman in Hawley. In 1978, Lonnie began his career at Peavey Lumber, which eventually became Ulen Building Supply, and was there for 38 years, working his way up to manager. He married his high school sweetheart Sue Klemetson in 1978. They made their home in Ulen where they raised their children, Kristin and Luke.
From an early age, Lonnie was interested in hunting and fishing. JoNeil Schultz became a great mentor and friend to him, teaching him the ropes. He became an avid fisherman and spent many hours in the boat with his fishing buddies, known as "The Hounds". He cherished his time at White Earth Lake and was the only person to fish in the Cedar Crest Classic fishing tournament every year since it began, taking first place with JoNeil in 2006. Beginning this year, a trophy will be given to the person who catches the largest walleye in the tournament, known as "The Lonnie Anderson Award" in his memory.
Despite being diagnosed with colon cancer in 2015, Lonnie made the most of his time, including a fishing trip to Alaska, helping to build his retirement home on White Earth Lake, trips to New Orleans, hunting and fishing, woodworking projects, and spending time with his family and friends.
Family was very important to Lonnie, and those lucky to have been a part of it are his wife of 46 years, Sue Anderson of Ogema, their daughter Kristin (William) Johnson of West Fargo, ND and son Luke (MeLissa) Anderson of New Orleans, LA.; grandchildren Zaria Anderson and Isaiah Johnson, and Jupiter and Jet Anderson; sisters Shirley Anderson and LoAyne (Robby) Voigt; brother-in-law Bob (Stacy) Klemetson; sisters-in-law Karen (Leon) Andersen, Janet (Brian) Maesse, Jenny (Cris) Anderson, Nina Anderson, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Harlan, in-laws Justin and Muriel Klemetson, and niece Emily Klemetson.
Lonnie and his family are forever grateful to the staff at Roger Maris Cancer Center and for all the support of family and friends all these years. Blessed be the memory of Lonnie Anderson.
