Lloyd Toftner, age 91, of Mahnomen, MN, formerly of Gary, MN, died Thursday, February 13, 2014, at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.
Lloyd G. Toftner was born November 2, 1922, to Theodore and Karrie (Ysen) Toftner on the family farm near Gary. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at St. Petri Lutheran Church, rural Gary. Lloyd attended country school Poplar Grove School Dist. # 91 and later high School in Gary where he graduated. He later attended and graduated with an A.A. degree in Aviation Mechanics from Wahpeton School of Science. Following graduation, he worked as an aircraft mechanic in Jamestown, ND. In 1946, Lloyd was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict. After an honorable discharge, Lloyd worked at the airport in Jamestown for a short time before returning home to help with the family farm. Lloyd then worked side-by-side with his brother, Garfield, raising cattle and small grains until his retirement in the early 2000's. He has spent the past few years as a resident in the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.
Lloyd took great pride in his connection with his community. He was a lifetime member of the St. Petri Lutheran Church, serving on the board as Treasurer until its closing. Later Lloyd was involved at Gary Lutheran Church and also served as the Strand Township Treasurer for over 30 years. Lloyd was a very proud Veteran and served as a board member and past Commander for the Gary American Legion Post #505.
Lloyd is survived by several cousins. He was preceded by his parents, brother, Garfield, and an infant twin sister.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at Gary Lutheran Church in Gary, MN. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment was at St. Petri Cemetery, rural Gary.
