Leroy
Hedahl
May 10, 1932 — Nov 19, 2024
Twin Valley
LeRoy Clarence Hedahl, 92, of Twin Valley, MN, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at Benedictine Care Community in Ada, MN, under the compassionate care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
LeRoy was born on May 10, 1932, to Clarence and Isla (Lindback) Hedahl on the family farm just north of Twin Valley, MN. LeRoy attended Breezy Point School and graduated from Twin Valley High School with the Class of 1950. After graduation, LeRoy worked in International Falls, MN, loading boxcars for a yard crew. In 1952, he was called to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army. LeRoy served in Korea with the Signal Corps and was honorably discharged in 1954.
While in International Falls, LeRoy met Joan Steele, the love of his life. They married shortly after his return from service, on January 16, 1955, at the Lutheran Church in International Falls. The couple initially made their home in Halstad, MN, where LeRoy operated "Hedahl's Produce" and installed dial systems for the Halstad Telephone Company. In 1957, they moved to Twin Valley, where they raised their family and built a life together.
LeRoy wore many hats throughout his career, working for the Twin Valley Times newspaper until 1967 and taking on a variety of jobs afterward, including at Morey Erickson's Auto, Co-Op Oil, the Ada radio station, construction projects, and 11 years as a millwright. Later, he pursued home remodeling and handyman work, eventually earning a Professional Sales degree from Detroit Lakes AV Technical Institute in 1987. LeRoy officially retired in 1993, though he continued to "just tinker," as he liked to say. LeRoy and Joan shared 62 wonderful years of marriage until her passing in 2017. In his later years, LeRoy resided at the Benedictine Care Community in Ada.
An avid outdoorsman, LeRoy found joy in fishing, hunting, and gardening. During the colder months, he could often be found reading Louis L'Amour novels or rolling dice with friends. He had a lifelong passion for learning and believed in the motto, "You're never too old to learn and do." LeRoy's love for his family was evident through his acts of service, going out of his way to physically show he cared instead of simply saying it (the true Norwegian way!).
LeRoy was a dedicated member of his community, serving as a Boy Scout leader, 4-H leader, and a member of the Wild Rice Conservation Club. He also participated in the Twin Valley VFW honor guard and served on the Twin Valley City Council. LeRoy's legacy is one of kindness, resilience, and a tireless spirit. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
LeRoy is survived by his four children: Deborah McDonald of Severance, CO, Kyle (Rosana) Hedahl of Des Moines, IA, Susan Hedahl of Ada, and Kathy (Dennis) Leines of Crookston, MN; five grandchildren: Kimberly (Eric) Flinn, Kellie (Mark Horner) McDonald, Kevin McDonald, Jeremy Leines, and Michelle Leines; five great-grandchildren: Andrew, Abbigail, Bryson, Weston, and Ava; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joan; and siblings: Irvin, Irene, James, and Inez.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 2, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., with a visitation starting one hour before, at Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley. Burial will take place at the Twin Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
