LeRoy "Rocky" Starkey, age 56 of Northome, MN, formerly of Mahnomen, MN, died Wednesday, November 14, 2012 in his home.
LeRoy Dale Starkey was born June 28, 1956 in Fosston, MN, to Harley and Priscilla (Stall) Starkey. He grew up in Mahnomen, MN, and graduated from Mahnomen High School. He furthered his education and received his teaching degree. Rocky was united in marriage to Cindy Nelson and to this union came two sons, Carson and Isaac. In 1983, Rocky entered the United States Army. Following an honorable discharge, he returned briefly to the area before living in the Twin Cities area and moving to Northome in 1990. Over the years, Rocky taught drivers education, first grade and coached basketball. He also worked as a DJ in Northern Minnesota. Due to health concerns, Rocky had recently retired.
As an avid outdoorsman, Rocky enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also a huge sports fan, following and cheering on the best and only teams in the league…the New York Giants and New York Yankees. Rocky was a member of the American Legion and St. Michael's Catholic Church in Northome.
Rocky is survived by his sons, Carson (Fiance, Suzanna) Starkey of Chicago, IL and Isaac Starkey of Bismarck, ND; his mother, Priscilla "Percy" Starkey of Mahnomen; two brothers, Mark (Linda) and Terry, both of Mahnomen; two sisters, Judy (Steve) Bellefeuille of St. Michael, MN, and Vicky (Tom) Burford of Bagley, MN; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harley; grandparents, Wilbert and Clara Starkey and Louis and Theresa Stall.
Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 3 pm at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Mahnomen, MN, led by Father Tony Fernando. Diane Spaeth will play the piano and Jennifer Kahlbaugh will be the song leader. Serving as pallbearers will be Andrew Burford, Dustin Burford, John Francis, Terry "Bud" Starkey Jr., Dean Bellefeuille, and Adam Starkey. Honorary bearers will include Dennis Bellefeuille and Kurtis Francis.
Visitation will be held Monday, November 19th from 5-7 pm with a rosary at 6:30 pm at Anderson-Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen.
Burial will be in the St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Mahnomen.
