Obituary

Leonard Voit, age 88, of Mahnomen, MN, died Monday, November 30, 2015, at Mahnomen Health Center, Mahnomen, MN.
Leonard George, the son of George and Anna (Rehm) Voit, was born July 31, 1927, in Beaulieu Township. He attended country school through 8 th grade and as a young man worked on the farm. In 1952, Leonard was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge in 1954, Leonard resumed working on his parent's farm. He met and later married Luella Bjornson on October 6, 1954, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Beaulieu. The young couple worked on a farm in SD for two years until coming back and buying a farm east of Mahnomen. Together they raised their eight children and farmed for 42 years. Leonard and Luella moved into Mahnomen once they retired.
Leonard was a carpenter at heart, spending much time woodworking and building many storage sheds. He also liked to frequent auction sales. In their younger days, Leonard and Luella enjoyed dancing at the Flowing Well and playing cards. Since 1997, they have also loved their annual winter trips to Lake Havasu City, AZ, which became a second home with many friends. Leonard held life memberships with the Mahnomen American Legion Isaacson-Bjorge Post #31 and the Bejou VFW Wild Rice Post #1226. He was also a lifelong member of St Michael's Catholic Church in Mahnomen and the Knights of Columbus Mahnomen Council #2573.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Luella of Mahnomen; three sons and five daughters: Jerry (Susanne) of Mahnomen, Ron (Sue) of St John's, FL, Barbara (Charlie) Neisen of Ada, MN, David (Denise) of Mahnomen, Janet Lamb of Mahnomen, Betty (Gene) Kappes of Ada, Sandy (Glenn) Valdezate of Henderson, NV, and Gloria (Howard) Voit of Lengby, MN; 22 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Lillian (Melvin) Haider of Mahnomen and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Ervin, Kenny and Allen; and three sisters: Mary, Amy, and Florence.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 2:00pm on Saturday, December 5, 2015, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Mahnomen. Visitation was at Anderson Family Funeral Home in Mahnomen on Friday, December 4, 2015, from 6:00pm until 8:00pm, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary and Prayer Service beginning at 7:30 pm. Interment was at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery.
