Leona Pfund, 89, of Ada, Minnesota, died Saturday, November 20, 2010,
at Bridges Care Community, Ada, under the care of hospice.
Leona Evangeline Pfund was born on April 14, 1921, near Twin Valley, at Heiberg, Minnesota, the daughter of Clarence B. and Marie Johanna (Heiberg) Olson. She had two brothers and sisters, and following her mother's death, her father remarried Afton Hanson Storms, making her the oldest of nine children. Leona's grandfather owned the first power plant in Norman County, which was located on Highway 32 at the bridge on the Wild Rice River north of Twin Valley. In 1930, the family moved to Ada when her father, C.B. Olson, was hired by the City of Ada Water and Light Department. Lee graduated from Ada High School, and then attended the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and later the Minnesota School of Business. When World War II broke out, she gained employment with Northern Pacific Railroad in St. Paul.
Lee and her husband-to-be, John Pfund, were college sweethearts, but the war interrupted marriage plans, as John was drafted and served with the Army Air Corps overseas for 44 months. They were united in marriage following his discharge on January 19, 1946. The couple made Ada their home, and Lee wrote a column for many years in the Index, "More or Less by Lee", and also gathered the local news. She was active in the First Congregational Church of Ada for many years, serving as its organist for 25 years. She was also active in Faith United Church. Her hobbies included quilting and golf, and she was very proud of her Norwegian heritage.
Lee is survived by four children — Mia Jane (Blaine) Backberg, Cottage Grove; Ross David (Pat), Ada; Beth Luise (Paul) Muehlberg, Grand Forks, North Dakota; and John Cole (Rona), Fargo, North Dakota. There are nine grandchildren––Maria Wallander, Michelle Shouse, Ellee Rasmussen, Ross Pfund, Jr., John Muehlberg, Andrew Muehlberg, Hannah Muehlberg, Cole Pfund and Sofie Pfund and seven great-grandchildren. Survivors also include two brothers––Alan (Elaine) Olson, Arroyo Grande, California; Les (Marlene) Olson, Kent, Washington; two sisters––Clarice Wallace, Roseville; Sonja (Ambros) Johnson, Aitkin; three step-brothers –– Graydon (Olga) Storms, Bodega Bay, California; Lowell Storms, Encinitas, California; Howard (Elaine) Storms, Livermore, California; and one step-sister, Elaine (Alan) Olson, Arroyo Grande, California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Pfund, on July 24, 2010.
Public visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, at Faith United Church, Ada.
Private Family Funeral Services will be held on Friday, December 3.
Burial will be in the Ada Cemetery.
The family requests memorials to the Bridges Medical Foundation for their ongoing fundraising efforts for a silent call system for the Care Community.
