LaVonne Dorseth of Flom, MN passed away on January 26th, 2026, at Viking Manor, Ulen, MN.
LaVonne Lue Hammer was born to Edwin and Lucille (Fabre) Hammer at their home in Twin Valley, MN on November 21, 1935. Although she was to be a Christmas baby, she decided to come for Thanksgiving. She joined one brother, Robert "Bob", and 12 years later a little sister, Janine, was welcomed into their family. LaVonne was baptized at the UCC church in Waubun, MN and confirmed her faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley. LaVonne grew up in Twin Valley where she attended Twin Valley Public School. Her sophomore year the family moved to Crookston, MN where her father was promoted to another job at Ottertail Power Company. Her father died unexpected and it was then that her mother moved the family back to Twin Valley. LaVonne graduated from Twin Valley in 1953.
LaVonne married Vernon Dorseth of Flom, MN on June 20, 1954, at Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley. The first year of their marriage they lived in Moorhead, MN where she worked for Bell Telephone. In the spring of 1955, they moved to the Flom area where she began her life as a farmer's wife on a dairy farm. They lived their entire married life on the farm. It was here they welcomed and raised their four children: a son, Greg, who passed away on Sep 20, 2012, and three daughters, Terri, Jennifer and Jolene. She is blessed with 11 Grandchildren, 32 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandsons.
LaVonne was active in their church, Aspelund Lutheran Church of Flom where she taught Sunday School. She was also active in the Popple Grove 4-H club serving as a leader while her children grew up. For many years, LaVonne also ran the 4-H Food stand for Mahnomen County. LaVonne was also employed for a time outside the home by working a few seasons at American Crystal Sugar. After her father-in-law passed away, she took over the Long Branch Bar in Flom, until it burned in April of 1973. She also ran the Flom Cafe for many years before going to Twin Valley and working for ACI Tele-eccentrics as a Tele-marketer.
Lavonne loved to cook, bake, can produce, and make Norwegian specialties. Her homemade Kransekake gained her top honors at the Norsk Hostfest in Minot, ND. She was very proud of her Norwegian Heritage. LaVonne and Vernon were avid Hostfester's for many years. She has also made three trips to Norway learning about her heritage and making wonderful memories. In 1980, she traveled with her daughter Jennifer and Vernon's Aunt and Uncle Mabel and Edgar Skansgaard, in 1983 she and Vernon went to visit with Vernon's relatives in Norway, and the last trip they made was with her brother Bob and his wife Dorothy Hammer in 1998. LaVonne was an exceptional seamstress. She made clothes for her children, suits for Vernon and also dresses for herself as well as sewing quilts for the grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She leaves behind her children: Terri (Dale) Thornton of Twin Valley, Jennifer (Mike) Klemetson of Flom, and Jolene (Jeff) Brevik Twin Valley; grandchildren: Jon (Sarah) Thornton, Jason (Becci) Thornton, Jim (JoAnn) Thornton, Ben (Laura) Thornton, Kayla (Brett) Christensen, Jacob (Miranda) Klemetson, Katie Lue (Ezra) Baer, Jared Klemetson, Adam (Kristin) Brevik, Aaron (Courtney) Brevik and Kristian (Brandi) Brevik; 32 great grandchildren, soon to be 33; two great-great grandsons; one brother Bob (Dorothy) Hammer of Chambersburg, PA; and her sister, Janine Breslin of Moorhead. She is also survived by her siblings-in-law: Alden Dorseth of Little Falls, MN, Linda (Keith) Axvig of Fargo, ND, and Gloria Francis of Mahnomen, MN.
LaVonne was proceeded in death by her parents, Ed and Lucille Hammer; her husband, Vernon Dorseth and her son, Greg Dorseth; siblings-in-law: Shirley Dorseth, Sanford and Donna Mae Albertson and Roland Francis.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 2, 2026, at 11:00am, with visitation 1 hour prior, at Aspelund Lutheran Church rural Flom. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2026, from 2:00pm – 4:00pm, with a prayer service at 3:00pm, at Aspelund Lutheran Church rural Flom. Interment will be held at the Aspelund Lutheran Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff of Viking Manor in Ulen and HIA Hospice for their extraordinary care and compassion they gave to LaVonne.
