Laurel Keeney, 67, Shelly, MN, died Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Altru Health Systems, Grand Forks, ND.

Laurel was born on July 13, 1945 in Ada, MN, the daughter of Julius and Hazel (Hauge) Aarestad. She grew up in Norman County and graduated from Halstad High School. She also attended Northland Community College in Thief River Falls, MN.

Laurel was united in marriage to Tom Keeney on June 5, 1966, at Bethany Lutheran Church, near Shelly. They lived in Shelly and raised their family. For many years, she was self-employed and operated Draperies by Laurel, and beginning in 1984, worked with Tom as custodians for several Halstad area businesses. Laurel was also a seamstress performing many alterations in addition to the drapery business. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, caring for pets, and watching and feeding her birds.

Laurel is survived by her husband, Tom, a son, Tom (Becky) Keeney, both of Shelly, MN, a daughter, Naomi (Mike) Stevens, Columbia, SC, four sisters, Joyce Fortier, Mason City, IA, Arloine (Hilbert) Carlson, Ardale, WI, Florence (Ron) Balzum, Ada, MN, Marilyn Arlien, Fargo, ND, two brothers, Julian (Sandi) Aarestad, Moorhead, MN, Kenneth (Phyllis) Aarestad, Thief River Falls, MN, three grandchildren, Allison, Jennifer, and Sean, and several nieces and nephews. Laurel was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Denise Keeney, a granddaughter, Samantha Keeney, and her sister, Donna Sorheim.

Visitation and Gathering: 4-7PM Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad.
Interment: 11:00AM Friday July 5, 2013 at Augustana Lutheran Cemetery, Halstad, MN.
