Laura Louise Widrig, 93, of Fertile, MN, died on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at the Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile.

Laura was born on August 12, 1920, to Paul and Alvina (Paul) Treichel at home in Lockhart, MN. She grew up an attended in Lockhart Public School. Moved to Crookston, MN to live with relatives, where she did house keeping.

On July 5, 1941, Laura married Miron Widrig in Ada, MN. They made their home on a farm west of Fertile. Laura helped out with milking cows, tending gardens, canning, fieldwork and picking potatoes. She also helped Miron with his trapping business. In the later years she raised strawberries and raspberries, selling to friends and neighbors. After the children left home, Laura used her knack for baking and cooking in many local cafes and restaurants in the area. She was well known for her doughnuts and pies.

Laura enjoyed handiwork - she made crocheted tablecloths for each of her children, as well as many handmade items for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also took pride in making hooded sweaters for the little ones. She was a longtime and devoted Minnesota Twins fan. More than anything else; Laura was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt and mother-in-law. She had a kind and loving temperament and was always thoughtful toward everyone.

In 2001, Laura and Miron moved into Fertile. Miron died in 2008 and Laura entered the Fair Meadow Nursing Home in 2008. Laura connected with the staff, always telling them she loved them and appreciated their care.

Laura is survived by her children: Gloria (Marlen) Peterson, Ada, MN; Marlys Visser, Gary, MN; Karen Helgaas, Fertile, MN; RoseMary (Lew) Modahl, Moorhead, MN; and Mike (Linda) Widrig, Fertile, MN; 22 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter; and several nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, grandchildren: Matt Helgaas, 1996 and Cindy Modahl, 1970; son-in-laws: Harvey Helgaas, 2002 and Gerald Visser, 2002; grand son-in-law: Richard Stene, sisters: Isadora Schurdevin, Nora Lively, brothers: Edwin, Henry and Leonard.

Funeral services will be on at 11:00am, Monday, March 31, 2014 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile, MN.

Visitation will be one hour before the funeral at the church.

Burial will be in the Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Fertile, MN.
