Laura M. Valen, age 92, of Twin Valley, Minnesota, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, in Twin Valley Living Center, Twin Valley.
Laura Mable Hagy was born October 13, 1916, the daughter of Harry and Gurina (Noss) Hagy in Waukon Township, east of Gary. She attended country school in that area and later attended the Agricultural College in Crookston. As a young lady, Laura worked for a short time in the Twin Cities. Her mother died at a young age and Laura returned home to help raise her younger siblings and help on the farm. On April 15, 1939, Laura was united in marriage to Arne Valen. The couple purchased a farm east of Gary where they raised their family and farmed until Arne's death in 1984. Laura continued to live on the farm until moving into the Lincoln Terrace Apartments about four years ago. In February of this year, Laura entered at the Twin Valley Living Center where she lived until the time of her death.
Laura was a life long member of Ness Lutheran Church where she was active in the ladies aid, circles as well as teaching Sunday school for several years. Laura's hobbies included traveling, crocheting, playing bingo and tending her flower gardens.
Laura is survived by two daughters, Jeanne (Lamont) Hoppestad of Farifield Glade, TN and Joanne (Gilbert) Van Hale of Minneapolis, MN; two sons, Arvid (Shirley) Valen of Gary, MN and David (Meg) Valen of Mendota Heights, MN; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a brother-in-law, Lloyd Hovelson of Gary, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters and two brothers.
Funeral Services was held on Monday, March 23, 2009 at 2:00 PM in Ness Lutheran Church, rural Gary, Minnesota. Burial took place in Ness Lutheran Cemetery, rural Gary.
