Obituary

Larry Smit, age 58, of Twin Valley, Minnesota, formerly Gary, Minnesota, died Tuesday, November 23, 2010 in Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, North Dakota.

The oldest of three boys, Larry was born August 16, 1952 the son of John and Lorene (Bergerson) Smit in Arlington, South Dakota. At the age of five, the family moved to Twin Valley until 1971, when they moved to Gary. Larry helped operate the family-owned Gary Cashway Lumber for several years. He had worked for different trucking companies in the area until his health would not permit him to drive any longer due to chronic kidney failure. On September 26, 2009 Larry was united in marriage to his companion of 12 years, Jan Gerding, in their back yard in Twin Valley. They have made their home in Twin Valley since that time.

In Larry's spare time he enjoyed sitting by the computer and playing Pogo games as well as being outside watching the birds, enjoying nature and spending time with his loyal pet dog, Molly Ann. Larry's family was important to him as he truly treasured visits with his 21 month old granddaughter, BreAnna Ganaden and 11 month old grandson, Aden Gerding, who will miss falling asleep in the arms of their grandpa.

Larry is survived by his wife, Jan of Twin Valley, MN; three step children, Chad Gerding of Fargo, ND, Kyle Gerding of Fosston, MN and Lacy Gerding of Twin Valley, MN; two brothers, Jerry and Jim Smit both of Gary, MN; two grandchildren, BreAnna Ganaden and Aden Gerding; four cousins and his extended family of nurses and friends at the Dialysis unit at Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and uncle, Willard.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 29th at 10:00 AM in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel, Twin Valley. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home on Monday. Officiating will be Pastor Norm Gullingsrud with music provided by Norm and Lori Gullingsrud. Honorary pallbearers will be Curt Haas, David Lampton, Lee Thompson, Les Walker and Dale Armstrong.
