Lawrence A. Foley

Lawrence A. Foley, 92, Halstad, MN died Sunday, April 25 at Merit Care
Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, in Fargo.

Lawrence Arnold Foley was born March 3, 1918, near DeLamere, North
Dakota, the son of Henry and Selma (Nygaard) Foley, the youngest of 10
children. Larry grew up on the family farm, was baptized and confirmed
at Immanuel Lutheran Church, just south of DeLamere, and graduated from
Milnor (ND) High School in 1935. Following high school, he moved to
Moorhead, and was employed by the Peterson Truck Farm and the Gamble
Skogmo Company. In 1942 he enlisted in the US Army, serving as a
surgical technician with the First Medical Regiment, spending nearly 3
years in the South Pacific during World War II. He was wounded in the
Leyte, of the Philippine Islands, for which he received Purple Heart
recognition. He returned to his company 5 months before Japan offered
its surrender.

Larry married Isabel Schmidt of Wales (ND) on January 23, 1946, after
which, they moved to Halstad (MN), where they opened and operated a
Gambles store for 9 years. Later, he worked as a rural mail carrier for
26 years.

Larry and Izzy were fortunate to adopt 4 children between 1953 and 1962.
The family was an active part of the Halstad community for many years.
Larry was a charter member of the Halstad Lions Club, a 62 year member
of the American Legion; he volunteered for the Halstad Fire Department
for 29 years and belonged to the VFW, DAV, AARP, NARFE, Community Club
and was active in the St. Joseph and Holy Family Catholic Church
parishes. Izzy died suddenly in 1972. In October of 1974, Larry and
Elaine Jaeger were married. During their 26 year marriage, they enjoyed
several winters in Arizona. Elaine died in 2000.

Preceding Larry in death were his parents, his 9 siblings (Julius Foley,
Marie Foley, Palmer Foley, Corrine (Foley) Peterson, Arthur Foley, Myrus
Foley, Evelyn (Foley) Butler, Harriette (Foley ) Dahlstrom and Herbert
Foley), and Isabel and Elaine.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Mary (Dave) Aune, Detroit Lakes; Beth
(Manuel Barbosa) Foley, Halstad; sons, Chuck (Lori) Foley, Peoria,
AZ; and Brad Foley, Halstad, his grandchildren, Chantelle (Andrew) Wimer, Coon Rapids, Danette (Kevin) Peterson, White Bear Lake, MN, Brianne Aune, Detroit Lakes, Connor Foley, Cory Foley and Carly Foley, all of Peoria, AZ; and Margarita Barbosa, Halstad.
Larry is also survived by a great granddaughter, Isabelle Wimer, Coon
Rapids, MN, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service: 11:00AM, Friday, April 30, 2010, at Halstad Lutheran Church.

Visitation: Thursday from 5-7PM with a 7PM prayer service at Holy Family Catholic Church, Halstad, and Friday for hour before the funeral

Burial: Ada City Cemetery, Ada, MN.
