Lance Schultz, age 78, died unexpectedly Friday, January 5, 2018 at his home in Hitterdal, MN. Lance Darcy Schultz was born July 5, 1939, the son of Harold and Florence (Oss) Schultz in Fargo, ND. He was raised in Hitterdal, where he attended school graduating from the Hitterdal High School with the Class of 1957. He went on to further his education by attending NDSU for one year. On September 17, 1960, Lance was united in marriage to Janice Lien in Ulen, MN. The couple made their home in Hitterdal all their married years. Lance worked at Kraft Foods, and later at Herzog Roofing for several years. In the early 1970's, he purchased his dad's service station in Hitterdal then known as H & L Oil, which he operated until the early 2000's. After that, Lance went to work with Flom Mutual Insurance Company for several years. For the past few years, he was employed by West Central Ag as a truck driver in both the spring and the fall. A true fan of the Ulen-Hitterdal Spartans, Lance seldom missed a game. He was very proud that all his children and grandchildren were former Spartans. Lance had a competitive side that showed through in his talents as a great horseshoe and bean bag player. He also loved playing cards, pheasant hunting, his trips to the boundary waters, and was an avid reader. Most of all, Lance loved his family and spending time with them. Lance was a charter member of the Hitterdal Lions, and a member for 30 plus years. He was also a past Hitterdal Fireman, Councilman, and former Mayor of Hitterdal. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janice; one daughter, DeeAnn (John) Amundson of Audubon, MN; three sons, John Schultz, Jeff (Susan) Schultz, and Bob (Marie) Schultz, all of Hitterdal; seven grandchildren: Kayla (Brady) Fuglie, Nick (Lydia) Amundson, Brady (Amber) Schultz, Meghan (Kyle Olsen) Schultz, Lindsey (Luke) Halverson, Lexi (Nate Christensen) Schultz, Landon (Lexy Backer) Schultz; four great-grandchildren: Carson & Sophie Fuglie, Hayzen Amundson, and Maximus Olsen; one brother, Reid (Sue) Schultz of Urbandale, IA; one sister, Roxanne (Warren) Lundberg of Fargo, ND; one brother-in-law, Don Lien of Hoyt Lakes, MN; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Florence; one great grandson, Dexlyn; father- and mother-in-law; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law, and a nephew. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at Salem Lutheran Church, Hitterdal. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
