Kevin "Scrap" Heinonen Sr., age 60, of Ponsford, MN, died on Monday, October 23, 2023, at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Kevin Scott Heinonen was born October 9, 1963, in Park Rapids, MN, the son of Lester and Dorothy (Thompson) Heinonen.  He grew up in South Minneapolis, MN, where he attended Phillips High School.  Following his schooling, Scrap entered the workforce hanging sheetrock and working at IGA.  In 1985, Kevin was united in marriage to Elaine Dow.  The couple made their home in South Minneapolis and were blessed with six children. While living in South Minneapolis, Kevin continued to provide for his family and worked at Kaplan Brothers and Sears.

In 1994, Kevin moved his family north to Shell Lake, to make their home. He was employed by the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen in the Maintenance Department. Over the next several years, he worked different jobs including working the potato harvest and for Hartman Hide and Fur.

Scrap was an easy-going individual who enjoyed simple things like playing Bingo, cribbage, a cold beverage and visiting with family and friends.  He liked to tinker and make something out of nothing!  He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Kevin is survived by three sons: Kevin Sr. (Andrea), Timothy and Richard; three daughters: Heather Heinonen, Crystal Heinonen and Mary Lynn Heinonen; several grandchildren; four brothers: Mike, Perry, Leslie and Robin; and three sisters: Lori Heinonen, Sheila Harvala and Lisa Heinonen; many nieces, nephews and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Dorothy.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at the Old Pine Point School in Pine Point, MN, with a Ceremony being held at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue until the time of the Funeral at 11:00 am on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at the school. Burial will be in the Breck Memorial Episcopal Cemetery, Ponsford, MN.
