Obituary

Kenneth Keogh, age 88, of St. Paul, MN, formerly Waubun, MN, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, son, brother, husband and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at Lyngblomsten Care Center in St. Paul.

Kenneth Wayne Keogh was born February 6, 1934 in St. Louis, MO, to Charles and Irene Keogh. The family moved to Waubun, when he was a child and he has called it home for the rest of his life.  Ken attended Waubun Public School and participated in many student activities including band and football. After high school, he joined the US Army and completed boot camp at Camp Stoneman in California. He was deployed with the 40th Infantry Division to the Korean conflict. Ken attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was a drill instructor for a time. While he shared many good memories of his Army service in Germany and Japan, many of his experiences in the Korean War, especially winter deployment, were harsh and despite his love for the outdoors, he never tent camped again.

Ken married his wife, Mary Ann McArthur of Mahnomen in 1956.  They raised five children, making their home in Waubun. They both worked hard during that time, Ken in construction and Mary Ann at home with the kids but they were always together, always Kenny and Mary Ann, and there was nothing he wouldn't do for her. They were married thirty years, until her death in 1986.

After his Army service, Ken worked briefly as a tile setter then spent the majority of his career working in the construction industry. He began in the early 1960's as a heavy equipment operator working on interstate roads and missile sites.  Ken later worked for S & S Construction in Moorhead, MN, as an operator, foreman, and many years as superintendent, responsible for earth moving and grading operations.  He oversaw many highway, city street, and site preparation projects in Minnesota, North and South Dakota. Ken finished his career with Northern Improvement and F & M Asphalt, retiring in 1996.

Ken married Patricia Clark in 1988. They were very happy together and enjoyed family, time at the lake, trips to the casino, and snowmobiling. They drove to Alaska in their camper for a once in a lifetime adventure. Ken and Pat were married until her death in 2019.

Ken's favorite places were the woods and the great outdoors. He enjoyed deer hunting, trapping, dark-house ice fishing, snowmobiling, and time at the lake. He especially enjoyed his garden, planting and taking care of it through many summers.  Ken was always busy cutting and splitting firewood. He sometimes showed a tough exterior but is remembered as a good guy who truly enjoyed being with friends and family. Ken was easy to talk with and made many good friends in the Waubun, Mahnomen, and Ogema areas.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles; wife, Mary Ann, and wife, Pat.  He is survived by his children: Mike (Molly) Keogh of Shorewood, MN, Kyle (Bob) Janssen of Marine on St. Croix, MN, Kristine Biggerstaff of Fargo, ND, Kurt (Colleen) Keogh of Sunfish Lake, MN, and Henry (Rachel) Keogh of New Richmond, WI; grandchildren: Daniel Keogh, Mary Ann (Ryan) Keegan, Elizabeth Keogh, Will (Jessica) Keogh, Bob (Kara) Janssen, Ken (Kristi) Janssen, Kate (Brady) Janssen, Charlie Janssen, Leo Janssen,  Madelaine Johnson, Bill Biggerstaff, Benjamin Keogh, Paige Keogh, Mitchel Keogh, and Gavin (Karina) Keogh; and great-grandchildren: Patrick, Sheila, Aria, & Rogan Janssen, Kennedy & Frederick Janssen, Joe Keogh, and Finnegan Keegan.

A Graveside Service with military honors will be held on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery, Mahnomen, MN.
