Obituary

Kathleen Elsie (Giard) Burdick, 94, of St Cloud, MN, formerly Lengby, MN, started her journey from this Earth November 9, 2020 at her daughter's home in the care of St. Croix Hospice.

Kathleen, affectionately known as "Granny" to everyone including her family, was born June 11, 1926 in a log home to Henry Alexander Giard and Katherine Elsie (Montgomery) Giard.  She spent her childhood growing up in Mahnomen County around the Beaulieu area with her 10 siblings and numerous cousins.  She attended country school and attended high school in Mahnomen and was very proud of the fact that she had earned her GED.  In 1941, her life changed dramatically when she met Stanley John Burdick who became the light of her life.  On Feb 12, 1943, on his first leave from the US Army, they were married.  In April of 1946 when Stanley returned from WWII, the two purchased a little farm in Clover Township which became their lifelong home.  While living and working on their farm they were blessed with seven daughters and one son.

Granny loved being outdoors and always had a big garden and plenty of flowers.  She worked tirelessly on that farm milking cows, raising chickens, and helping wherever Stanley needed her in order to provide a happy, safe home for her children and husband.  In 1966, with her children about grown, she started working at the Naytahwaush Sewing Factory where she was employed for 20 years.  When the factory closed, Granny purchased her sewing machine and started making and selling men's flannel shirts.  Her little endeavor became very successful and she sold her flannel shirts locally and even had some sent overseas.  I'm sure there are still people walking around wearing one of her "Granny Flannels" and remember her as the "Shirt Lady".  She loved her flowers and was especially proud of her huge raspberry patch.  All of her grandchildren have such great memories of coming to the farm seeing Grandpa and Grandma and being able to raid the garden and raspberry patch.  She also served as treasurer for Clover Township for many years.  Her life was well lived and her family will miss her dearly for the love and kindness she showed to all.

Our mother, "Granny" is survived by her seven daughters: Virginia Marie (Fred) Eichel, Mount Pleasant SC, Elsie Louise Wolff, Belle Plaine, MN, Janice Irene Adkins (Ron Frick) St. Cloud, MN; Katherine Hollis (Ron) Shea, West Fargo, ND, Barbara Jean (Richard) DeHaan, Detroit Lakes, MN, Priscilla Ann (Bruce) Wilfahrt Eagan, MN, and Patricia Mary (Bradley) Athmann, Mahnomen, MN; daughter-in-law, Audrey Burdick, Lengby; sisters, Irene Lorentz, Edina, MN and Ruth Waltz, Battleground, WA; 19 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Stanley John Jr., and three grandchildren, three brothers, and five sisters.

A private family burial service was held last fall at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery and a Public Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 29, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Nee Gon Nee Lutheran Church, Roy Lake, MN. All are welcome.
