Obituary

Katherine "Honey" Goodwin, age 69, of Mahnomen, MN, died Thursday, September 30, 2010 at her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Honey was born August 8, 1941 in White Earth, MN, to Leonard Sr. and Katherine (Morgan) McDougall. She grew up in Naytahwaush, MN, where she attended grade school. Honey graduated from Mahnomen High School and furthered her education at Haskell Institute with a degree in business. Kathy worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Bemidji, MN, before being united in marriage to George V. Goodwin, Jr. The couple was married at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Naytahwaush, MN, on September 7, 1963.

Honey worked for several federal government agencies for 35+ years. She worked primarily in Indian Health Service, but also the Food and Drug Administration and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Over the years, George's employment took the family to different parts of the country. They spent time in Bemidji, White Earth, Cass Lake, and Minneapolis, MN, Arlington and Falls Church, VA. Their love for family, friends and the beauty of this state always brought them home to Minnesota. Honey retired from Indian Health Services in 2005, however, she continued to work at the Mahnomen Child Care Learning Center until the time of her death.

Kind, sweet, gentle, loving, beautiful, and a true lady, are only a few words that describe Honey. She always put others before herself. Family was first and foremost and some of the best times of her life were the births of her children and grandchildren. Honey thoroughly enjoyed being a part of each of their lives, watching and admiring them as they grew. She also enjoyed the times she was able to spend with her very special friends, Deanna and Arnold, who were always there for her. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

Katherine is survived by a son, James Goodwin of Fargo, ND; a daughter, Dana (Dennis Williams) Goodwin of Mahnomen; four grandchildren: Georgia Goodwin-Chaffee, Quinne Goodwin-Chaffee, Genevieve Williams and DeAndra Williams; two brothers and five sisters: Leonard (Jeanne) McDougall Jr. of Naytahwaush, MN, Janice (Marcell) Goodwin of Bagley,MN, Norma FitzGerald of Monroeville, PA, Maxine (Paul) Boswell of Waubun, MN, Gloria (Clinton) Goodwin of Bagley, Earl (Eileen) McDougall of Naytahwaush, and Suzanne (Dean) Bishop of Waubun. Also surviving Kathy is one aunt, Verna Millage of Callaway, MN and very, very special friends, Dee and Arnie Rasmussen. In addition to her husband, Kathy was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Verna "Girlie" McDougall and one brother, Vern McDougall.
