Joyce Smith's Obituary
Joyce Faye Smith, age 67, of Mahnomen, MN, died Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at the Pioneer Home in Fergus Falls, MN.
Joyce was born April 17, 1946, at home, in rural Waubun. Growing up, she attended country school, then Waubun High School to graduate with the class of 1964. After high school, Joyce worked for a time in the area followed by a move to the Minneapolis, MN, area. Most of Joyce's adult years were spent in the Twin Cities area, where she worked for 38+ years at Dayton's/Macy's Department Store. At the age of 61, Joyce retired and moved back to Mahnomen in 2007 and began caring for her aging mother. Ruth passed away in October of 2012 and Joyce remained in Mahnomen. Joyce's recent bout with cancer proved to be too much for her earthly body to endure.
Through everything life threw her way, Joyce always kept a positive attitude. She had a great sense of humor and was a genuine, giving individual. While working at Dayton's, Joyce kept many of her nieces and nephews clothed in the best of apparel. In addition to being the family historian, Joyce truly enjoyed spearheading family get togethers and often provided most of the food to go with them, until the inevitable would happen to part of the meal. Joyce loved to cook and bake, but sometimes got sidetracked while doing so.
Over the years, her faith never faltered, and she kept quite involved with the church, both at Epworth United Methodist in Minneapolis and Circles of Faith in Waubun. Other activities Joyce enjoyed were; listening to the Statler Brothers, especially Harold, fishing, riding in the pontoon and driving. She was known for putting on many miles just to get a good deal!
Joyce is survived by three brothers: Larry (Lori) of Perham, MN, Howard (Corrine) of Brooklyn Park, MN, and Dale (Marilyn) of Prescott Valley, AZ; two sisters, Jean (Tony) Kraft of Waubun, and Judy (Dale) Quittschreiber of Ogema, MN; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and all her aunts and uncles.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00p.m. on Monday, December 23, 2013, at Circles of Faith United Church of Christ in Waubun, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Mahnomen, MN.
