Joyce Pierson, 84, Fertile, MN, died Sunday, December 18, 2016, at Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile.
She was born on March 1, 1932, to Emil and Josephine (Lecy) Sonstelie in rural Winger, MN. Joyce was confirmed at Sand Hill Lutheran Church, rural Winger. In 1950, she graduated from the McIntosh High School, McIntosh, MN. Following her schooling, Joyce moved to Fertile and worked at Ole's Café, and later as a grocery clerk.
On June 7, 1951, Joyce was united in marriage to Arvin Pierson at Webster, SD. After having three boys, Joyce stayed home to care for them until 1966. Arvin and Joyce bought Stenberg's Hartz Grocery Store. Together they operated the store until October of 1989, when they sold the business to their son, Allen and his wife, Laura.
During their retirement years, Joyce and Arvin traveled to Arizona during the winter months and enjoyed camping and fishing in the summer months on Upper Red Lake, Lake of the Woods, and Canada. She was a longtime member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile American Legion Auxiliary and the Crookston VFW Auxiliary.
Joyce and Arvin enjoyed life together. Raising a family of boys stretched Joyce's personality in a great way. Fishing with her family and camping developed tremendous memories for her and the family. Planting seeds and watching them grow into nutritious vegetables and colorful flowers gave Joyce a sense of accomplishment. Cooking for her family, especially around the holidays, was a joy for Joyce, as she loved to gather, play games and laugh with her children and grandchildren. Joyce will be greatly missed by all.
Joyce is survived by her sons: David (Debra), Wadena, MN, Allen (Laura), Fertile, MN, and Keith (Deborah), Grand Forks, ND; three granddaughters: Amanda (Mike) Syverson, Fertile, MN, Caty (Terry) Larson, Fertile, MN, and Mariah (Matthew) Simonson, Grand Forks, ND; great-grandchildren: Willow, Koa, and Wren Larson, all of Fertile; and several nephews and nieces.
