Jon
Hovde
Nov 14, 1947 — Nov 12, 2018
Fertile
Jon Hovde, 70, a lifelong resident of Fertile, Minnesota passed away at his home on Monday, November 12, 2018, surrounded by family. He was born on November 14, 1947 to Ole and Arleene (Larson) Hovde. He graduated from Fertile High School in 1965 and shortly after moved to California to work with his uncle in the construction business. It was there that he met the love of his life, Darlene Black.
Jonny, as a young man, was well-known around Fertile because of his paper route, which he faithfully delivered to resident's for many years. He also mowed lawns, shoveled snow, and picked up odd jobs while in school. Through diligently saving his money, he was able to purchase a brand new Honda motorcycle which he proudly drove and willingly gave rides to his friends and family.
In 1967, at the age of 19, Jonny entered the Army and was sent to Viet Nam in October of the same year. He was severely wounded in January of 1968, losing an arm and leg. It was then, while on an ice blanket, that Jonny made three vows to God if his life would be spared. Those three promises of: having the fastest car in Polk County, not being dependent on the government, and making a difference in the lives of others; were goals he strived to fulfill throughout his life.
On June 21, 1969, Jonny married his California girl, Darlene, and moved her to Minnesota where they remained throughout their life. A proud graduate of North Hennipen College in Minneapolis and Moorhead State College, Jon took a position at 3M in St. Paul as an executive in their marketing division. Due to complications from his injuries he left his employment at 3M and moved his family to Fertile, MN.
Jon's greatest pride and joy was his family, especially his children: Jeremy and Jessica who blessed him with five wonderful grandchildren whom he adored. The best times were when his house was filled with his family enjoying holidays, playing games, riding four-wheelers, and playing and singing with his talented grandchildren. Jon beamed when he talked about how very fortunate he was to have his children and grandchildren live so nearby and to be able to watch them grow. One of his hardest times in his last weeks was knowing he would be leaving this family he cherished so much!
Jon led a life of dedication through his service on the School Board, Concordia Church Board, American Legion, VFW, DAV, Polk County Fair Board, Minnesota State High School League, and Minnesota State School Board. He was well known for his award winning book, "Left for Dead" and his many motivational speeches on, "Making a Difference". He spoke to countless groups, both large and small throughout the United States. The speeches closest to his heart were those he made to students and fellow military members.
Jon is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Darlene; his son, Jeremy Hovde and wife Sarah; daughter, Jessica Ellingson and her husband Nathan; and grandchildren Preston and Sierra Hovde; Olivia, Norah, and Sophia Ellingson all of Fertile. Also surviving are three sisters: Barbara Renna (Cliff) of Minneapolis, twin sister Cathy Bolstad (Keith) of Fertile, and Lana Christensen (Les Holte) of Fergus Falls, MN and a brother-in-law Alden Webster of Osseo, MN; as well as his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bert and Mary Black and brothers-in-law Dennis (Wendy) Black and Gary (Cathy) Black of California. Other survivors include many nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister's Karen and Peggy; and brother-in-law Dale Black.
