Jon Gunderson, age 57, of Thompson, ND, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2026, in Thompson.
Jon Ole Gunderson was born on October 5, 1968, in Hillsboro, ND, to Omer and Adeline (Bagne) Gunderson. He grew up with his family near Caledonia and attended school in Hillsboro, graduating with the Class of 1987. Shortly after graduation, Jon proudly enlisted in the United States Army, where he served as an armor crew member, until his honorable discharge in 1989. His military service gave him many experiences and memories that he enjoyed sharing throughout his life.
In 2001, Jon was united in marriage to Rhonda Pinske. Although the couple later separated, they were blessed with two sons, Brandon and Dylon, who remained the great source of pride and joy in Jon's life.
Jon took great pride in every job he did. Whether operating heavy equipment or tackling a project, he was known for his precision and attention to detail. He often credited his steady hand and confidence operating large machinery to the skills he developed while driving tanks in the Army. Most recently, he worked for Greenworks Landscaping and Fencing in Grand Forks, ND.
When he wasn't working, Jon found his greatest peace outdoors. He loved fishing, taking boat rides, working in the yard, tinkering on just about anything, playing with the dogs, and simply sitting outside and enjoying the beauty around him. Though naturally quiet and a bit shy, Jon had a unique sense of humor that sometimes caught people off guard. Once you got to know him, his dry wit and perfectly timed comments were sure to leave you smiling and shaking your head.
Jon is survived by his sons, Brandon and Dylon Gunderson; brother, Jason Gunderson; special friend, Elizabeth "Buffy" Thompson; uncles, Elling Bagne, Vern (Arlene) Bagne, Gerald (Lori) Bagne, and Francis Ayotte; aunts, Janice Tveitbakk and Joy Gleason; along with many cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Omer and Adeline Gunderson; beloved dog and faithful companion, Shadow; uncles, Richard Tveitbakk, Steve Risa, and James Gleason; and aunt, Betty (Gunderson) Ayotte.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 12:00 p.m., with visitation one hour prior, at Anderson Family Funeral Home in Halstad, MN. Inurnment with full military honors will follow at Caledonia City Cemetery in Caledonia, ND.
