Johnny Leon Moe, age 80, of Gary, MN, died Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loved ones while under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Johnny was born to Melvin and Louise (Hall) Moe on July 2, 1938 in Viroqua, WI. He moved with his family as a child to Hitterdal, MN, and then to Twin Valley, MN. He was confirmed in faith at the Zion Lutheran Church and attended school at the Twin Valley Public School. He spent many days working long hard hours at the farm and with Grandpa Hall. At the age of 18, Johnny entered the Air Force. He worked as an aircraft mechanic in the Philippines, Hawaii, and other various locations across the United States. He was honorably discharged on July 15, 1962; and returned to his home area where he worked hauling gravel for Ray Christensen. Johnny was united in marriage to Shirley Thompson on October 9, 1964 at the Gary Lutheran Church. They were blessed with three children: Terri, Tamara, and Johnny. He began working for S.S. Construction. Throughout his 39-year career in road construction, he worked in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana primarily on a paving crew working his way up to foreman and supervisor. He retired from road construction in 2000, and returned to helping out with farm work. Johnny was employed by Matt & Denise Sirjord even up until the time of his death.

Dedicated and generous best describe Johnny. He loved gardening, canning, and especially cooking. He was an avid Bison fan, dog lover, and history buff. He enjoyed playing cards, as well as his daily visits over coffee with Doug Low. He loved to help people out and could fix anything, mechanical to electrical. Storytelling was one of Johnny's favorite pastimes. He told the stories in a manner that would captivate you and leave you waiting for the next story. Most of all, Johnny loved and cherished his family. He was a proud member of the 49ers Union for over 28 years, and a member of the Gary Lutheran Church. Johnny's affectionate smile, contagious laugh, humorous stories, and exceptional sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

Johnny is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley; two daughters, Terri Sirjord and Tamara (Ben) Ramstorf, all of Gary; one son, Johnny Moe, Jr. of Twin Valley, MN; four grandchildren: Natalie (Cedric) Smith, Kennedy Ramstorf, Riley Ramstorf, and Gabby Moe; four great grandchildren: Mya, Rhianna, and Drake Smith, and Hayden Olson; two sisters, Sharon (Ron) Chirstensen  and Melvina (Gordy) Olson; two brothers, Leonard Moe (Radona Malin) and Bruce (Cindy) Moe; one aunt, Evelyn Knutson; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Dale Sirjord; grandson, Josh Sirjord; sister and brother-in-law, Loma and Larry Ford; and sister-in-law, Bev Moe.
