John Johnson, 97, Fertile, MN, died Monday, October 10, 2011, at Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile, MN.
John Henry was born June 22, 1914, in rural Fertile, MN, to Carl and Nora (Rude) Johnson. Johnny attended grade school at District #72, near his home in rural Fertile. He served his country during WWII from 1942-1945, in the United States Army. He operated heavy artillery and fought many battles throughout France and Germany, including the Battle of the Bulge. Johnny was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. When he returned to his home, Johnny worked with his brothers logging and operating a portable saw mill and working for area farmers.
In 1948, Johnny and his brothers, Rudolph and Walter, bought a farm in Gregory Township, east of Bejou, MN. Johnny lived there with his brother, Rudolph, until he entered the Fair Meadow Nursing Home in June 2008.
Over the years, Johnny enjoyed playing his violin and accordion. He and his brothers played at many area churches, nursing homes and area functions. For many years they also played at the Farmers Union booth at the Minnesota State Fair. He and his brothers were known to be a one family softball team and orchestra. Johnny enjoyed working in the woods and with wood.
Johnny is a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Yggdrasil I.O.G.T. (International Organization of Good Templars), an organization to promote temperance, peace and brotherhood.
Johnny is survived by two brothers: Rudolph (the oldest of ten boys), Fertile, MN, and Kenneth (Verla) (the youngest tine boys), Gary, MN; a special nephew, Mark (Shari), Fosston, MN; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by seven brothers: Olaf, Albert, Alfred, Elmer, Hjalmer, Leonard and Walter, as well as two nieces, Debbie Roragen and Cathy Baumgartner.
