Laport
Apr 15, 1940 — Aug 18, 2023
Twin Valley
John LaPort, age 83, of Twin Valley, MN, passed away on Friday, August 18, 2023, at Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen, MN, under the excellent care of the nursing staff and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
John Allen, the son of John and Alice (Aasgaard) LaPort, was born at home near Flom, MN, on April 15, 1940. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Twin Valley. As a teenager, John worked on his uncle's farm and enjoyed playing high school football. Following his high school graduation with the class of 1960, John farmed full time. Within a few years, John and his brothers began expanding their family farm. The brothers farmed cropland and raised dairy cattle together until their retirement. Just a few years ago, John sold his farmland to their nephew in hopes of continuing this family legacy.
In 1976, John was united in marriage to Georgianne Olson. They made their home near Twin Valley and were blessed with one daughter, Ricka. After the couple divorced, John moved back to the home place near Flom. Recently, as his health rapidly failed, John became a resident of Viking Manor Nursing Home where he received the around the clock compassionate care he needed.
Although a quiet man, John was active in his community. He spent many hours volunteering with, and was the current President of, the Flom Lions Club. He was a devoted member of Wild Rice Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and proudly helped with the annual Pancake Supper every year. John loved to bowl and played in various leagues for over 50 years. With his experience, John took on the responsibility of reporting the bowling results to the local paper each week. He made many wonderful friends on his bowling teams and attended several state tournaments. He also enjoyed gardening and always looked forward to his Sunday card games. John liked to make everyone around him smile by joking and kindheartedly picking on those he loved the most.
John is survived by his daughter, Ricka Brendle of Blacksburg, SC; three brothers: Monrad, Amos (Lonnie), and Donald (Lynnel), all of Twin Valley; one sister: Linda (Jack) Hoss of Mahnomen, MN; two grandsons, Michael and Zachary; great-granddaughter, Paisley Marie; six nieces and nephews: Jack (Lynette) Hoss, Jeff (Missy) Hoss, Annette (Dave) Carlson, Sarah LaPort, Kayla (Peter) Skroch, and Nathan (Sarah) LaPort; four, step-nieces; six great nephews: Javid, Ethen, Shyler, Nick, Henry, and Walton; and five great-nieces: Olivia, Alyshia, Jesse, Destiney, and Doris.
