Obituary

John Jamison, age 93, of Ada, MN, died Monday, September 25, 2017 at Bridges Care Community in Ada, MN.

John Wesley Jamison was born June 10, 1924, near Burlington, Iowa, the son of Fred Elerick and Grace Rose (Smith) Jamison. When a little over one year old, he moved with his family to near Arvilla, North Dakota, where he attended country school. In 1938, the family moved to Ada, MN, where John attended Ada High School, graduating in 1943. For the next two years, he assisted his father, farming and raising livestock for the war effort. When his older brothers returned home after the war, John enlisted in the army and was stationed in the Receiving Office of William Beaumont Army Hospital, Ft. Bliss, Texas. After his discharge from the army, John returned home and began farming on his own in the Ada and then Borup area. On November 13, 1949, John was married in El Paso, Texas, to Faye Cain, Daughter of John Robert and Thelma Cain, of El Paso. The newlyweds returned to Ada, where they lived until 1958, when they moved to Borup. John farmed in the Borup area until 1989 when he retired. In 1990, they bought a vacation home on Upper Cormorant Lake, in Becker County, where they have spent their summers, returning to Borup for the winter months. In 2008, John and Faye purchased a home in Ada, where they lived until 2016.

John was baptized and confirmed at First Methodist Church of Ada, now a part of Faith United Church. John was a regular member of the church choir for many years, as well as serving on the board of trustees, the finance committee, and numerous other activities in the church. He was a Master Mason, a demitted member of Norman Lodge #154. In Borup, he served as P.T.A. president, Community Club president, a 20-year member and chairman of the Borup School Board, for over 30 years was treasurer of the Borup Fire Dept., was for 25 years a firearms safety instructor for Borup youth, and was for many years a project leader for O B Jolly 4-H Club. In 1975, John was awarded the honor of "Outstanding Minnesota Alumni, having been a member of IXL 4H Club during his school years. He was a member of the history committee that wrote the history of the Borup area for the town's Centennial Celebration in 1988.

John was always among the first to help a neighbor who needed assistance. At his lake home, also, John was always there to help a neighbor – or boater with trouble with a motor or anything else. In his retirement years, his biggest joy, next to his family, was raising vegetables and flowers in his large garden in Borup, and then a small one in Ada, and sharing the produce with friends and neighbors.

John is survived by his wife, Faye; four children: Robert John (Joyce) Lake Park, MN, William Thomas (Cynthia), Fargo, ND, Barbara (Jerry) Tiegs, Maple Grove, MN, and Bryan (Janet), Shoreview, MN; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Edward R. (Yolanda) Jamison of Chicago.; two cousins who were part of the Jamison Family: Mabel (John) Hagen, Fertile, MN, and Robert (Ardella) Smith, Evergreen, CO.; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: William S., Thomas, Richard E, and Donald; three sisters – Elizabeth Kelly, Suzanne Crowl, and Jean Brothers; and cousin, Bertrum Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorials be made to the Faith United Church and the Borup Fire Department.
