John Myron Gunderson, 87, passed away peacefully at home on December 26, 2022 and now is with his heavenly Father. He was born to Ole and Clara (Slette) Gunderson of Gary, Minnesota on November 26, 1935. John graduated from Gary High School in 1953 and began farming with his father.
John was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marilyn (Luchau), December 28, 1960. Together they had five children, whom he was very proud of. In 1971, he was the recipient of the MN Outstanding Young Farmer NW District Award. John farmed, had dairy cattle and feeder pigs for many years until his eldest son, Kelly, took over the family farming operation that now continues with the help of John's grandson, Garrett.
For many years, he worked security at WE Fest, enjoying all of the excitement and crowds. After moving to Ada, he worked at the Ada North Beet Piler for much of the 90's and also drove the DAC van. John enjoyed driving in many parades. He showcased new pickups and also his grandfather's 1927 Whippet. He loved auction sales and antique machinery. In retirement, John enjoyed gardening and making lefse with his wife, Marilyn.
John was a man of faith and was a steward at St. Petri Lutheran Church from the age of seventeen.
John is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marilyn, and their five children; Kelly Gunderson, Ada, Nicky (Linda) Gunderson, Omaha, Tracy Gunderson, Fargo, Perry (Amy) Gunderson, Northfield, and Tammy (Perry) Sweeten, Mankato, as well as 16 grandchildren; Brittany Pavek, Corin Bragstad, Garrett Gunderson, Greta Gunderson, Ava Gunderson, Thomas Gunderson, Arjan Majidian, Kiana Parmer, Isabella Gunderson, Sophia Gunderson, Joel Gunderson, Elsa Gunderson, Inga Gunderson, Johnny Gunderson, Caden Sweeten, Sidra Sweeten and 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Lowell (Borgie) Gunderson, Ada.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 2, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation starting one hour before, at Grace Lutheran Church in Ada. Burial will take place in the spring at St. Petri Lutheran Cemetery, Gary, MN.
