Joel
Gunderson
Sep 7, 2005 — May 6, 2024
Northfield
Joel James Gunderson, age 18, of Northfield, MN, died Monday, May 6, 2024, from carbon monoxide poisoning sustained in an auto accident near Barnesville, MN.
Joel James was welcomed into this world on September 7, 2005, in Edina, MN, by his loving parents, Perry and Amy (Jesperson) Gunderson. Being the third of six siblings, Joel was the glue that meshed everyone together. Joel was the go-to when his big sisters needed help and a wonderful role model for his younger siblings. His family meant the world to him. Joel grew up in Northfield, MN, attending public school until 3rd grade, thereafter, beginning his home school studies. He thrived at being able to work at his own pace and therefore accelerated his education. This flexible schedule also allowed him to get up early, workout, complete his schoolwork, and work part time. Joel was currently employed at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, MN working in the dietary department. He spent the rest of his time doing the things he really loved, which usually included anything with a motor.! He was playfully known as "tinker-bell" as he spent hours in the garage working on projects and tinkering on engines. Whenever he could, Joel was in his boat, riding ATVs or snowmobiles. He especially loved driving around in his 1997 Jeep Wrangler and Polaris Scrambler. He also enjoyed playing sports, (basketball, baseball) and hanging out with friends. Joel was jovial, happy, and fun. He could talk with anyone and instantly became a friend. To know Joel was to love Joel, and he was truly an inspiration to many. This spring, Joel graduated, with honors, from Gunderson Academy Home School and Normandale Community College, earning both his diploma and his associate degree through PSEO. He had been accepted into the University of North Dakota Commercial Aviation program and was planning to enlist in the Air Force ROTC. Most importantly, Joel was a child of God, and his faith was evident throughout his life. He is now in the arms of his Lord but will live on through his beautiful legacy.
Joel is survived by his parents: Perry and Amy; four sisters: Isabella, Sophia, Elsa, and Inga; one brother, Johnny, all of Northfield, MN; his paternal grandma, Marilyn Gunderson of Ada, MN; maternal grandma Gloria Jesperson of Prior Lake, MN; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins; as well as many close friends.
He was preceded in death by both of his grandpas, John Gunderson and Lester "Jim" Jesperson.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Berean Baptist Church in Burnsville, MN on Friday, June 7th at 10:00 am. Doors will open one hour prior. All who knew Joel, or the family, are welcome. An ice cream social will follow.
