Janet Viola Nelson, 88, of Ada, MN, formerly of Hendrum, MN, passed away on Friday, December 12, 2025 at HIA Heather's House in Fargo, ND, from complications following colon cancer surgery.
Janet was born at home on September 20, 1937, in rural Gary, MN, to Olaf and Cora (Hagy) Dahl. After graduating from Gary High School, Janet moved to Ada, MN, where she worked in the Norman County Courthouse in the Highway Department Office. During this time, she met the love of her life, Vincent M. Nelson. They were united in marriage on December 30, 1962, at the Ness Lutheran Church in rural Gary, MN. The beautiful Christmas decorations that adorned the church's trees continue to be heirlooms handed down to family members for their Christmas trees.
Janet and Vincent moved to Hendrum where they lived for a few years before moving to the Nelson family farm east of Hendrum. Here they made their home and raised their daughters, Lorraine and Vonnie.
Janet was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hendrum where she taught Sunday School and participated in quilting, Ladies' Aid, serving groups and various other activities. Janet was also an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Community Club and Red Hats.
Janet worked on the family farm doing many things including bookkeeping, providing meals, and various jobs outside around the farmyard and shop, and made sure everything was organized, clean and tidy. She provided countless rides back and forth to the field while equipment was being moved, up until just a few years ago. Janet enjoyed gardening, baking and cooking, always making sure everyone had enough to eat, embroidering, quilting, and sewing, including making many dresses and other items for her daughters and nieces. Janet enjoyed taking care of her family and grandchildren and making many phone calls to check in with family and friends.
Janet is survived by her daughters, Lorraine (John) Jossund of Perley, MN and Vonnie (Brian) Borgmeier of Saint Peter, MN; her grandchildren, Andrew (Kayla) Jossund, Laura (Noah) Johnson, Daniel Jossund, Evan Borgmeier, and Will Borgmeier; great-grandson, Luther Jossund; siblings, Marion Rude, Clarice Ose, Lillian Bennefeld, Norman (Leona) Dahl and Walter (Eileen) Dahl; and many nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent; parents, Olaf and Cora Dahl; siblings, Harry Dahl, Carmen Dahl and Florence Drellack; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernon Rude, Larry Ose, Beverly Dahl, James Bennefeld, Elmer Drellack, Francis Nelson and Esther Nelson.
Memorials are preferred to the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery Fund.
We would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Mission Court in Ada, MN, the Essentia Clinic in Ada, MN, the Essentia Hospital in Fargo, ND, HIA Heather's House in Fargo, ND as well as Pastor John Andrews, Chaplain Stephen Streed and Chaplain Grace. Also, thank you to Janet's many friends and family members for your care, concern and support during this time.
